Description
Role Description
As a lab scientist in the Hit ID & SAR Generation component of the Primary Pharmacology Group (PPG), support the primary and secondary plate based pharmacology needs of the Research Unit portfolios through subset screening, hit triage, hit-to-lead screening, and generation of data to drive chemistry design cycles.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be a member of a laboratory with other lab scientists focused on primary and secondary plate based assays supporting the portfolios of Pfizer's Research Units. Applicants must have a scientific and/or drug discovery background as well as experience with in vitro screening for a wide range of biochemical and functional assay formats. Experience of plate based pharmacology is essential and expertise in biochemistry & enzymology is preferred. Also advantageous to the role is experience with high-throughput screening techniques and equipment, and knowledge of up-to-date assay technologies. This role will be responsible for implementation and execution of in vitro screening strategies as part of overall project plans, and will be required to drive efficiency, quality, cost, and standardization whether the screens are carried out internally or externally. Familiarity with relevant software tools such as SiGHTS, RGate, Spotfire and PCAT would be beneficial.
The successful candidate will be excited by a role with high demands and multiple partners (e.g. Chemistry, RU Biology, Partner Lines, HTS and external CROs). The candidate should therefore possess strong collaborative and written/verbal communication skills as well as a positive attitude. He/she should demonstrate flexibility and be adept at multi-tasking while adapting to change and building relationships. The candidate should have strong team skills, be excited by novel approaches to delivery and be willing to try alternative ways of working.
Candidates will be expected to:
* Execute in vitro plate-based assays/requests from PPG, Research Unit biologists, and post docs.
* He/she will also have extensive experience with multiple biochemical and functional assay formats.
* Build strong relationships with PPG colleagues, RU biologists, chemists and partner lines to support RU portfolio.
* Understand the science of the assays they support and become an expert in assay transfer (e.g., assays from/to PPG colleagues, Research Units, HTS, CROs)
* Maintain a 'cutting edge' awareness of technical developments and scientific knowledge and apply these where possible to improve performance.
* Adopt a Continuous Improvement mindset to improve quality, efficiency and/or cost of processes within lab, within PPG and/or with customers and partner lines.
* Provide experimental support to programs at various stages: Exploratory-to-Clinical Candidate programs
* When appropriate, support collaborative initiatives to secure intellectual property and/or quality publications.
* Provide timely, high-quality data to project teams
* Use robotics and automation while performing assays for HTS or primary screening.
* Perform general laboratory maintenance
* Possess strong computer skills for data acquisition, analysis, QC, publication, and visualization
* Possess good writing and communication skills
* Troubleshooting laboratory instruments and assays
* Serve as a resource for area of technical expertise
* Maintain laboratory notebooks and records according to internal requirements.
Qualifications
Training & Education:
Minimum qualification BS 3 years of experience or MS with 1 year of relevant experience in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, or enzymology.
Prior Experience:
* Prior experience in a laboratory working as part of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the discovery of novel therapeutic agents
* Experience with assay execution, data analysis, QC, and visualization
* Able to build strong collaborative relationships with customers, have a customer focus and think beyond the voice of the customer
* Have a sustained track record of delivering high quality data that meets the needs of project teams.
* Experience interacting with other groups in related areas such as material management, automation and informatics is essential
* Demonstration of excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical assays and identify new scientific and technical platforms that support the work of the group
