Role Description

To advance the mission of the Discovery Network department in developing chemical approaches to the discovery of new lead matter and new targets; specifically, the use of natural products as leads for drug discovery programs across all research units at Pfizer. This will involve working on multiple aspects of compound design, chemical biology and synthetic biology- including identification and characterization of natural products leads, analysis, understanding and manipulation of biosynthetic gene clusters for analog production, and employing informatics approaches to natural product related data to reveal fundamental relationships between structure and activity.

Responsibilities

Advancing the Pfizer natural products strategic plan in the laboratory, with an emphasis on the isolation and structure determination of novel complex natural products, the semi-synthesis of analogs to develop SAR around lead compounds, and assist in the design and synthesis of natural products based chemical biology probes to elucidate mechanism of action. Some experience with actinomycete and/or fungal microbiology/fermentation science is a plus, and familiarity with contemporary synthetic biology approaches to metabolic engineering is also desirable.

Requirements

Qualifications

Highly motivated researchers with an interest in natural products, synthetic biology and/or chemical biology having a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree or equivalent in organic chemistry, synthetic biology, chemical biology, or bioorganic chemistry. Proven track-record isolating complex natural products combined with advanced abilities in further modification of microscale samples via semi-synthesis, biocatalysis, or other methods. Experience with complex structure determination of complex natural prodcuts, including application of contemporary NMR and mass spectrometry techniques. Innovative thinking and excellent communications and writing skills are required. Flawless execution with proven ability to generate high quality data as evidenced by publications in peer reviewed journals.
