Job Description

To underpin our commitment to bring safe and transformative medicines to patients, we are growing our highly innovative Translational Systems Toxicology group at Amgen.  Our mission is to ensure that both the drugs and drug targets we develop are safe and that side effects are minimized or eliminated.  To achieve this we are applying a variety of human in vitro approaches (including human genetics along with cell, molecular and structural biology techniques) to develop assays that can predict or elucidate mechanisms leading to drug safety issues.  In addition to working broadly to support pipeline projects, we are also developing novel methodologies for assessing the safety of our drug targets in human systems with the long-term goal of being able to focus our future regulatory studies in this area.

We are seeking a talented Sr. Scientist with expertise in cellular and molecular biology to join our growing group.  The successful candidate will play a hands on role as part of our broader efforts to apply cell biology approaches to understand and develop means of predicting the safety profile of the targets and drugs we are developing.

Key responsibilities

  • Drive wet lab efforts and provide subject matter expertise in the area of the development and application of a variety of human cell biology based assays and approaches to address a) the effects of drugs in development on specific molecular pathways and processes as a means of predicting their safety profile in humans, b) target biology across multiple therapeutic areas to shed light on specific questions around the safety of drugging a protein, c) mechanisms underlying safety issues that arise during development of our drugs and d) the impact of sequence variants on specific molecular pathways and processes that may be pertinent to drug safety
  • Lead the design, execution and interpretation of experiments conducted in the lab using a multitude of cell-based models (primary, iPSC, cell lines) and formats (organoid, 3D etc)
  • Serve as a project leader for the group interfacing directly with project team representatives to ensuring that efforts and data are aligned and integrated with portfolio goals
  • Manage team of lab based scientists providing hands on direction for their projects and  effectively helping to prioritize their work so that they provide support in a matrixed way for multiple scientist within the team
  • Contribute to defining the overall goals and strategy for cellular and molecular biology efforts within the group
  • Propose and contribute to the design of internal and external collaborations to further our research efforts in the area of three-dimensional cell culture and organ-on-a-chip
  • Represent group internally and externally through presentations, publications, networks, collaborations and conferences to promote approaches and raise the profile of work within the team

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Scientific experience

OR

Master's degree and 5 years of Scientific experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 7 years of Scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in molecular biology, cellular biology or related discipline with 4+ years of experience in the biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical industry with a particular focus on molecular, cellular and investigative toxicology
  • Deep expertise in cell and molecular biology techniques and approaches including advanced cell culture models (iPSC, organoids, three-dimensional) and contemporary molecular biology and 'omics approaches (e.g. genome engineering, RNAseq etc) as applied to probing perturbation of a variety of functional endpoints in a cell based context
  • Comfort in handling and interpreting high density datasets and providing actionable hypotheses for further investigation
  • Knowledge and exposure to drug safety assessment in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience in leading and contributing to research efforts in the area of drug discovery and development with a track record of delivering key wet lab datasets to influence project team decisions
  • Experience managing and mentoring research associates
  • Strong and relevant publication track record in top tier journals
  • Comfort in working in a highly interactive and vibrant environment designed to promote frequent interaction and brainstorming
  • Experience fostering external and academic collaborations
