Location: Berkeley, CA – USA

Reports Into: Vice President, CMC Development

Summary & Scope of Position:

The Senior Scientist will be responsible for designing, implementing, trouble-shooting and documenting analytical development experiments in technical reports. This is a “hands-on” laboratory position focusing primarily on developing UPLC, LC-MS, NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, CE, and other analytical chemistry methods to support small molecule and protein characterization. The candidate will participate in qualification and technical transfer of assays into Analytical Development, Process Development and contract laboratories. This position may also conduct studies to support biomarker analysis for clinical programs, and contribute to process development, and stability studies.

Requirements

Primary Responsibilities:
? Performing experimental work as part of assay development and/or qualification activities and writing protocols.
? Working with the Research Chemistry group to develop impurity assays for small molecule candidates and conceive overall analytical assay strategies for final candidates.
? Prepare and test samples for interpreting, summarizing, documenting and communicating results at team meetings.
? Identifying problems, communicating them to the team, and developing solutions.
? Overseeing work at contract labs to design, develop, transfer and qualify assays (some travel may be required).
? Provide expertise for trouble-shooting analytical chemistry assays in house and at CMO or CTL.
? Summarize, document and prepare data for databases and formal development reports and regulatory filings.
? Work independently with minimal supervision.
Requirements:
? Ph.D. with at least 8 years of pharmaceutical or biotechnology experience in Analytical Chemistry or related scientific discipline
? Strong foundation in experimental design, solid laboratory skills and ability to execute complex experiments
? Experience in UPLC and LC-MS is required
? Experience with protein characterization methods such as western blot is a plus

? Candidate must demonstrate strong attention to detail and documentation
? Ability to work independently within a team, share responsibilities and collaborate with strong team work attributes
? Candidate must have proven time management, technical writing, data presentation and effective communication skills to meet aggressive timelines and support department and corporate objectives.
? Strong knowledge of FDA and ICH guidelines
Specialized skills include:
? Previous supervisory experience of junior scientists or research associates a plus
? Previous experience with establishing and revising API and drug product specifications
? Microsoft Office suite: Highly skilled in Excel, and proficient in Word, Outlook, Power Point.
? Other data management skills including statistical software such as Graphpad Prism or JMP desirable.
