Sr. Research Associate - Sample Management - 75734
Organization:  GN-Genomics

The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) is searching for experienced Research Associates.  Will perform research assignments such as the collection, processing and analysis of data related to sample management tasks according to standard operating procedures.  Will write SOPs and prepare weekly sample QC reports and communicate the results to Project Managers.  Will evaluate the current and newly developed sample QC and aliquots making processes and provide logistic recommendations.  Will serve in a technical support role to improve the efficiency and quality of sample management processes.  Will closely interact with the Sequencing Technologies group members, as well as other technical and administrative support staff, and serve as the point of contact for sample issues.  Will report any technical problems that occurred in the sample management process.  Will exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actions to solve problems. Position reports to the Sample Management group Lead.

Specific Job Duties
Essential-
• Perform work assignments related to the sample acquisition process including the evaluation of collaborators’ samples, internal sample QC, and aliquot making and tracking.
• Serve in a support role for introducing new technology into the sample management process, which includes implementing new protocols from technology development, production optimization and new instrumentation.
• Generate weekly sample QC reports and distribute them among the relevant team members.
• Conduct validation test of newly developed processes aimed at improving data quality and reducing materials cost in sample management.
• Maintain a complete set of documentations (gel images, DNA pellet images, etc) for all nucleic acid samples.
• Responsible for training other personnel in the sample management processes.
• Collaborate with members of the Genomic Technology team to assure that proper procedures are followed to introduce new protocols.
• Attend new technology group meetings to discuss technology as well as learn about new technology.

Marginal-
• Present sample QC updates in group meetings.
• Participate in cross-team and cross-group collaborative projects in Genome Technology Development.
• May provide guidance and training to other team members.

Requirements

Key Success Factors
• B.S degree in Biology or Engineering or related discipline preferred and two to five years of experience in a research laboratory or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of DNA and sequencing methods and/or of probability theory (probability distribution functions, random variables, etc.).
• Experience utilizing high-throughput automated systems and equipment.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience utilizing next generation sequencing technologies.
• Good analytical skills to effectively evaluate data and make recommendations.
• Excellent and effective interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills; ability to  interact collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization.
• Must demonstrate efficient time management skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as part of a diverse team environment.
• Familiar with issues related to sequence quality and assembly.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
• Competent in the use of computers and related software programs; i.e., PC, Mac, and UNIX operating systems.
