Cellular Approaches is a biotechnology company focused on harnessing patients’ innate immune systems to treat myriad diseases. Building on recent innovations in cellular biology to create novel cell-based therapeutics, the company focuses on extending lives through treatments for infectious diseases, neuro-degenerative diseases, and aging. Cellular Approaches is developing a first-in-class, innate-immunity pipeline of therapeutics. The company plans to initiate its first clinical trials in 2018.

The company is funded and being incubated by two of the leading venture capital firms in the San Diego Area. Working predominantly in a “stealth” capacity, the company is rapidly growing in San Diego as well as through a network of development partnerships around the country.  The company is located in the Torrey Pines area of San Diego, California.  

Summary / Overall Purpose

We seek an experienced senior research associate to perform duties related to the isolation, differentiation, and characterization of macrophages from humans and rodents per established protocols.  Specific duties may include isolation and culturing of monocytes from human blood and rodent blood / bone marrow, biochemical assays (ELISA, qPCR), immunofluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry.  Will also be responsible for new assay development and establishing standard operating procedures (SOPs).    

Essential/Primary Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

•   Utilize a battery of assay technologies to independently characterize the monocytes / macrophages, including ELISA, qPCR, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence microscopy and in vitro killing assays.
•   Independently identifies and implements new assay technologies that have an impact on assay throughput and/or performance
•   Independently designs, executes, and performs basic analysis of experiments, including independent troubleshooting.
•   Primary immune cell isolation and cell culture with meticulous aseptic technique
•   Prepares detailed SOPs that enable transfer of validated assays to project team members and collaborators
•   Reporting of results to supervisor and internally at group meetings
•   May present findings at external forums (conferences)
•   Train and oversee the daily work of junior associates / technicians
•   Other duties as assigned, including the management of laboratory equipment and supplies and interfacing with vendors.

Requirements


Work Experience:

•   MS:  Minimum 5 years experience in academic or industrial setting, minimum 3 years in industry
•   BS: Minimum 8 years experience in academic or industrial setting, minimum 3 years in industry

Functional/Technical Knowledge and Skills

•   Extensive experience in many of the following:  primary human mammalian immune cell isolation and culture, ELISA, qPCR, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence microscopy
•   Previous experience in macrophage cell culture and characterization a plus
•   Experience evaluating and implementing new techniques.

Education/Training

•   B.S. or MS in immunology, biology, physiology, molecular and cellular biology, or closely related field

Other:

•   Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary groups in a fast-paced work environment
•   Able to work independently on experimental design, execution, and analysis
•   Excellent verbal and written communication skills and track record of ability to effectively present scientific data
•   Detail oriented; proven track record of detailed, reproducible protocol generation that can be broadly reproduced

•   Keeps calm under pressure
•   Some weekend work will be required
