Senior Director, Population Health - Gaithersburg, MD/Wilmington, DE

The Senior Director, Population Health role sits within the Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR)-Evidence Generation function of the United States (US) Medical Affairs (USMA) organization. S/he will provide scientific oversight for population health activities and serve as a single point of accountability for the development and execution of population health strategies across Therapeutic Areas (TA). Such activities will focus on the generation of evidence to characterize levels and distributions of health conditions within defined populations, ascertain determinants of health, and investigate the impact of interventions on the behavior and/or overall health of patients within health systems. Consequently, the Sr. Director, Population Health will provide scientific direction for evidence which further refine the real-world context of AZ product use. This position requires an experienced individual with expert scientific knowledge of intervention and population research and an independent strong leader with business acumen, excellent interpersonal skills, and commitment to patients.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities

As the Population Health expert within USMA, the Senior Director will hold the overarching accountability for the development and execution of Population Health research strategies across TAs. The role will achieve this by: closely coordinating with Managed Markets (MM) and Market Access and Patient Strategies (MAPS) colleagues during interactions with health systems regarding the development of population health projects, ensuring the scientific merit for the design and timeliness for the conduct of studies to describe population health needs and/or assess the impact of pertinent patient-level and/or structural interventions, and critically appraising the data source applicability, structure, and completeness, as well as the technical/analytical capabilities of collaborating health systems.

The Senior Director will also be serving as the Lead of population health research matrix teams, developing strategy and methods to identify and address health disparities, and ensuring internal alignment. Additional responsibilities include guiding the population health evidence generation planning and governance process, as well as the internal and external scientific communication with stakeholders and collaborators, serving as the HEOR representative in institutional collaborations with broad population health remit, and guiding the development of publication planning strategies and presentation/publication of scientific data at major medical and scientific meetings and in peer-reviewed journals.

Desired Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g., health economics, outcomes research, health services research, epidemiology, health economics, health policy or related fields)
  • Fifteen years of relevant experience (e.g., academia, consulting, and/or industry); a minimum of five years in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in the design and conduct of interventional and observational research is required; additional expertise in behavioral research is preferred
  • Expert research and analysis skills and a track record of scientific publications. Ability to work effectively, independently, and in a matrix team environment.
  • Will work on projects of diverse scope and complexity as a skilled specialist with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical training. Expected to exercise independent judgment within generally defined practices, guidance, and policies. Expected to represent AstraZeneca in external interactions with scientific, policy, and/or regulatory groups.
