We are located in Novato, CA, 25 miles north of San Francisco with operations in Brisbane, CA and also Basel, Switzerland. The role would be based in Novato.

Position Summary:
This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join a fast-growing Team at a rare disease biotechnology company. Routes to Care is a bespoke, purpose built function within Ultragenyx.

The Senior Director, Global Commercial Lead, Routes-to-Care will be designing a new function within the global commercial organization. Has primary accountability for developing an overall global strategy for identifying patients with rare diseases and mitigating barriers that prevent these patients from getting access to treatment.

Specifically this role will develop global strategies to:
·       Identify eligible patients suffering from the diseases for which we are developing therapies
·       Explore how to expand the physician base who treat these rare conditions
·       Identify and mitigate issues that may prevent these patients having access to new therapies
·       Ensure that patients who respond to these new therapies remain compliant over time to maximize clinical benefit

This person must have an innovative mindset, entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to collaboration in order to be successful in this role.  This position reports to the Head of Global Brand Strategy.

Responsibilities, include but are not limited to:
•   Develops the overall strategy to enable the identification of patients around the world who suffer from the rare diseases that our medications are targeting
•   Develops strategies to expand the awareness of rare diseases for which Ultragenyx is developing treatments, such that the number of physicians diagnosing nd treating these diseases grows over time
•   Partners both internally and with the external community to identify issues that create barriers to patient around the world accessing new medicines and develops strategies to address these
•   Partners with internal market access teams to maximize global access to our medicines for all eligible patients
•   Seeks to understand the reasons that patients discontinue therapies and develops strategies to enhance compliance and clinical outcomes
•   Leads the organization in a manner that is patient-centered and respectful of all customers and stakeholders
•   Works closely with colleagues in the Regions to ensure that Global strategies are translated into high impact tactics for implementation
•   Collaborate with Global Medical Affairs to ensure that all strategies developed are fully integrated across the organization and that implementation account-abilities are clearly defined


•   BA/BS degree required. Pharm.D / MD with MBA preferred
•   Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in a strategic capacity within marketing, field/sales or medical affairs; relevant experience in health care, reimbursement, biotechnology, pharmaceutical or related experience
•   At least 5 years in proven, successful leadership (Global or regional) capacity
•   Experience in managing external partners and heath care professionals to assist in the development of strategy and tactics
•   Strong business acumen, entrepreneurial mindset with solid scientific knowledge is preferred. Clinical experience is a plus
•   Ability to work in ambiguous situations and be creative in problem solving
•   Successful candidates will have a strong patient focus and an understanding of patient access challenges
•   Excellent analytical skills, well organized, and detail oriented
•   Ability to think strategically and work independently; strong presentation skills
•   Comfortable working in a fast paced high growth organization
•   Proven effectiveness in maintaining effective communication to all stakeholders
•   Proven teamwork and collaboration skills
•   Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects within specified timelines and quality standards, and have excellent public presentation skills, both written and verbal
•   Possess integrity and proven leadership abilities. They will show respect for diversity and continually energize their team while managing conflict
•   Demonstrated ability to collaborate and negotiate business solutions in a complex and fast paced environment.
•   Strong candidates will be astute in strategic planning and analytical skills, and will possess a focus of operational excellence in order to closely manage budgets.
•   Strong consulting, meeting management and group process facilitation skills are required to achieve pre-defined objectives
•   This position will require some travel and flexibility in work shift
