Job Description

The ideal candidate has hands on expertise in the development and execution of preclinical in vivo models of disease. Experience with immunological and/or oncology models is favored although other in vivo experience will be considered. The candidate will conceive experimental strategies and lead and participate in the design and conduct of experiments in biological systems to develop the early research and discovery pipeline at Nektar. The successful candidate possesses knowledge of relevant experimental biology techniques, focusing on in vivo proof of concept but possibly also including: molecular biology biochemical and cell- based assays, and  cell culture.  The candidate must be well-versed in hands on pharmacologic dosing, disease model testing, and PK /metabolism methodologies. Proficiency in multi-color flow cytometry method development, acquisition, and interpretation is a must.  This individual may participate in development of new in vitro cell biology assays. S/he will also interpret/ communicates experimental findings and write regulatory documents according to Nektar policy. The Scientist maintains broad knowledge of current scientific principles and theories, laboratory methodologies and new technologies.  The successful candidate can develop and analyzes new product concepts by reviewing preclinical and clinical literature.  This position contributes to and supports the company’s research and development efforts to create high value therapeutics to address unmet medical needs.

The Scientist will be responsible for the following: Working on complex problems in which analysis of data requires evaluation of various factors. Exercising judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Normally receives no instructions on routine work, general instructions on new assignments and may provide guidance to other personnel.  Synthesizing multiple data sources and draws general, non-obvious conclusions.  Defining problems, developing approaches and experiments with sound judgment with minimal supervision. Using professional concepts and scientific knowledge to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.  Acting as a principal investigator in conducting own experiments.  Participating in the development of patent applications.  Interfacing with various departments, customers and partners.  Putting work practices in context with larger team. Coordinating activities with other team members. Writing complex reports and protocols.  Assisting with implementing organizational systems, identifying capital equipment, and projecting near-term resource requirements if needed.


A PhD in a scientific discipline is required, preferably in the biological or related sciences.  A minimum of 2 years’ work experience in a research environment is required. Relevant post-doctoral work serves as experience.  Exceptional non-PhDs with demonstrated capabilities and/or significant experience may also be considered. A strong understanding of tumor biology with an emphasis on the use and development of in vivo models to study new therapies and their mechanisms of action is required. The individual ideally has a significant understanding of immunology.  Oncology expertise is favored but expertise in other indications will also be considered.  The individual will design studies to impact discovery, development and translational efforts for novel immune-modulating agents. Experience with a range of in vivo and ex vivo techniques including immune cell isolation, cell culture, flow cytometry, qPCR, gene expression or ELISA is a plus. Competency in the use, development, and selection of appropriate in vivo models is required.  Expertise with a variety of tumor or inflammatory models is favored.  The ability to increase Nektar’s capabilities in modeling human disease is a key component of the position. Proficiency with the use of software to support data analysis including FlowJo and Graphpad Prism is highly desirable.  Experience with databases is a plus.

A positive attitude and ability to thrive in a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment is a must.  Excellent candidates who have just completed postdoctoral studies are strongly encouraged to apply.  Additionally: Must be able to demonstrate success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.  Must be current in field, while able to demonstrate expert knowledge in scientific principles and concepts. Must be able to clearly communicate scientific information both written and oral with minimal assistance. Must be able to compose sound written work with no assistance.  Must possess good oral & written communication skills.  Must be able to demonstrate sound judgment. Must be able to demonstrate problem solving capabilities. Strong organizational skills are required. Good computer skills are required. Working knowledge of MS word, Excel, Power point is a plus. Experience working in an FDA regulated environment and knowledge of current GMPs as they apply to laboratory practices are highly desired. Must be willing to work as part of a team.  Must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
