Global Blood Therapeutics, Inc. (GBT) is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical dedicated to discovering, developing and commercializing novel therapeutics to treat grievous blood-based disorders with significant unmet need. GBT is developing its lead product candidate, GBT440, for the treatment of sickle cell disease and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Product Overview:
We are passionate and committed to developing our product candidate GBT440, an oral, once-daily therapy that is designed to modulate hemoglobin affinity for oxygen. GBT440 has the potential to treat sickle cell disease and improve hypoxemia in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Position Summary:

We seek a PhD level protein biochemist to make significant contributions to our drug discovery projects. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team including medicinal chemists, structural biologists, and cell biologists to characterize the biochemical properties of lead drug candidates and would additionally be expected to spearhead efforts to further elucidate the mechanism of action. He or she will play a key strategic role in identifying techniques and assay formats to profile and characterize small-molecule agents supporting early research and drug discovery programs. Attention to detail and the ability to communicate across multiple scientific disciplines are critical to the role.

Job Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include developing and executing biochemical assays for compound profiling, as well as selection and characterization of pharmacodynamic markers. Experience with protein expression, enzyme kinetics and assay development is essential. Additional experience in protein crystallography is a plus. Specific projects will involve collaborative interactions in a multidisciplinary group and across diverse biology areas that target proteins in blood and in other pathways of therapeutic interests.


•   A PhD. in biochemistry/molecular biology or a related discipline
•   Detailed knowledge and expertise in enzymology and enzyme-based assay development
•   Recombinant protein expression and purification
•   Broad practical experience in characterization of enzymes of different classes, utilizing of a variety of enzyme assays and detection technologies
•   Expertise and experience with biophysical methods  (fluorescence spectroscopy, ITC, DSF) for characterizing molecular interactions and determining affinity and mode of compound binding
•   Ability to do independent high level problem solving, develop creative strategies to optimize workflow, balance multiple projects and attention to details
•   Advanced data analysis skills
•   Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
•   Ability to work in a collaborative and dynamic environment
•   Ability to manage, mentor and develop scientists and research associates
