Astellas is announcing a Scientist -- Neuroinflammatory Disorders, located in Marlborough, MA.

Purpose & Scope:

•   Demonstrated potential for creativity and excellence. Candidate will design and conduct novel cell biology and molecular laboratory research and will play a key role in developing hESC-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) to treat neuroinflammatory disorders.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

•   Performs research and/or development in collaboration with others.
•   Makes detailed observations, analyzes data and interprets results.
•   Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project goals.
•   Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. Investigates, creates and develops new methods and technologies for project advancement.
•   Maintains high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and novel technologies.
•   Uses professional concepts in accordance with company objectives to solve complex problems in creative and effective ways.
•   Experience studying neuroinflammatory injury responses including microgliosis, excitotoxic neurotransmitters, demyelination, lymphocyte infiltration, and/or neuronal cell death
•   Solid command of aseptic cell culture procedures, pluripotent stem cell culture differentiation, flow cytometric analysis, cytokine analysis, qRT-PCR and/or immune-cytochemistry.

Quantitative Dimensions:

•   This position interacts with all levels of management on a routine basis and influences strategy. Works on complex and diverse problems giving guidance and suggestions. Actions may have implications on operations, budget and/or credibility.

Organizational Context:

•   Reports to the Director of Research





•   We are seeking a PhD (with 0-2 yr of post-doc experience) Scientist

•   Experience with aseptic cell culture techniques is essential; as well as is a background in neuroinflammatory disorders (eg, CP, TBI, stroke).

•   Background in Cerebral Palsy and/or Traumatic Brain Injury research.
•   Demonstrated industry experience or academic achievement, as evidenced by publications in high impact journals or drug development portfolio
•   Ability to collaborate with external partners across multiple scientific disciplines
•   Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.


•   A working knowledge of preclinical models for CNS hypoxia-ischemia and/or mechanical injury is a plus.

•   Previous experience in hESC-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs)
