SUMMARY

The process analytical scientist plays a lead role in the development and maintenance of analytical tools for support of process development and monitoring. There is a strong emphasis on protein chemistry, development of chromatographic methods and enzyme assays, and biophysical characterization for process design, product understanding, and troubleshooting.


RESPONSIBILITIES

The Scientist I/II will be part of the Process Analytical function within Process Sciences. This individual will be responsible for development of assays (HPLC, CE, spectroscopic, and/or enzyme based on experience) suitable for support of cell culture and purification process development for programs at all stages of research and development. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in the development, troubleshooting, qualification, and transfer of analytical methods for product quantitation and purity assessment.  Strong understanding of protein structure and biophysical characterization of proteins is preferred.  Familiarity with mass spectrometry or various spectroscopic techniques is a plus. This position requires an individual with good interpersonal and communication skills who enjoys working collaboratively and in a dynamic cross functional team environment.

The candidate will be responsible for:
-   Development of quantitative analytical methods for recombinant proteins and complex mixtures to support bioprocess development
-   Training of personnel in HPLC, spectroscopic, enzyme assays, and biophysical techniques and data interpretation
-   Maintaining systems to ensure consistent and high-quality test results
-   Interacting with various functional groups in Process Development, Analytical, QC, and Manufacturing to develop assays that meet program needs
-   Authoring SOPs and technical reports
-   Working on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting timelines

Requirements

EDUCATION

A Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry or biological sciences, plus 2 or more years of relevant industry or academic experience in the development of protein-based therapeutics. Strong candidates with M.S. degrees and 8+ years of experience will also be considered.


EXPERIENCE

-   Hands-on experience in the biotechnology industry or academic setting with a broad range of techniques, those focused on protein structure, purity, and assay is required
-   A candidate with experience with one or more technical areas (HPLC method development, enzyme assays development, or biophysical characterization analysis) is desired.
-   Experience with multiple HPLC hardware and software platforms
-   Experience with HPLC method development in various modes (RP, IEX, SEC, HIC)
-   Experience with electrophoretic methods (CE, CIEF) is a plus
-   Experience with development of enzyme assay and equipment
-   Experience with liquid handling systems
-   Experience with various biophysical characterization methods (CD, DLS, DSC, SPR)
-   Experience with mass spectrometric techniques (LC-MS, MALDI-MS) or spectroscopic techniques is a plus
-   Strong analytical troubleshooting skills are required
-   Understanding of the quality systems and regularity requirements is a plus
-   Goal oriented, quality conscientious, and customer focused are required.
-   Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
