   Main Duties and Responsibilities  


   This position within Cell Culture and Fermentation Sciences group involves performing cell culture experiments to develop, characterize, and scale up the cell culture processes. You will also be expected to write development reports to compile development knowledge and history as well as to aid regulatory submissions. In addition to performing these duties, you will be expected to evolve into a technical expert and is expected to have expertise in at least one of the key technical areas. You will perform substantial amount of work in metabolic modeling to understand the effects of various cell culture conditions on cell growth, metabolism, productivity, and product quality attributes. The modeling work is intended to help expedite the cell culture development and scale up work to ensure high productivity of cell lines without any effect on product quality. The work will also involve understanding fundamental aspects of bioreactor hydrodynamics including liquid-liquid mixing and gas liquid mass transfer and how these might affect the cellular metabolism. You are expected to have a strong background in biochemistry and mathematics.  You will also be responsible for development of cell culture processes including media development, feed development, and process optimization of various bioreactor conditions; process characterization to study the process sensitivity with respect to various process inputs including raw materials and their interactions using structured experimentation (DOE including screening and optimization designs). You will be expected to be familiar with process characterization principles and should be able to define the allowable operating space for the given process; development of scale down models for clinical and commercial processes; thoroughly performing data analysis at different scales that can be used to improve the scalability and refine the scale down models.   


   Essential Requirements  

   •Scientist I: Ph.D with zero to three years of relevant experience or Master’s Degree with eight to ten years of relevant experience  


   •Scientist II: Ph.D with three to seven years of relevant experience or Master’s Degree with ten to thirteen years of relevant experience  


   •Strong scientific/theoretical background in upstream process development  


   •Strong background in experimental design and data analysis skills are essential.      




   Desirable Requirements  


   •Candidates with prior experience in metabolic engineering, metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, system biology, bioreactor characterization, interface phenomena, fluid flow modeling, or mining of omics or NGS data is highly desirable.  


   •Excellent teamwork and communication skills including proven technical writing skills are required. Position may require weekend work.    


   •Capable of making independent decisions and will be expected to exercise judgement and decisiveness.  


   • Must be flexible who can multi task efficiently.   


   • Cell culture activities may require periodic weekend work.  


   • Expected to participate in departmental and cross-site meetings, with the ability to liaise and collaborate with others.
