Job Description

Pharmacyclics, an AbbVie Company, based in Sunnyvale, CA represents the single largest acquisition AbbVie has ever made, and is key to AbbVie’s corporate strategy to add another very significant growth platform and diversification. Pharmacyclics will be run as a semi-autonomous, fully integrated operating unit of AbbVie, with all functions including among others Commercial, R&D and Manufacturing. The integration into AbbVie should be minimally disruptive for Pharmacyclics; hence the identity, structures and relative independence will be minimally adapted at this time. The new President of Pharmacyclics is Erik von Borcke, currently a senior executive with AbbVie who has relocated to the Sunnyvale Area and reports to the Chairman and CEO of AbbVie, Rick Gonzalez.

The immune-oncology scientist is responsible for providing strong scientific and technical leadership in immuno-oncology programs at PCYC.

Key Accountabilities/Core Job Responsibilities:

Design and execute on empirical immune-oncology experiments to determine effect of NME in vitro and in vivo.
Execute on and manage in-house and CRO-driven in vivo preclinical and early clinical research to support the development of therapies in a variety of autoimmune diseases and hematological malignancies.
Provide scientific leadership in lymphocyte biology and establish and implement strategy for understanding the mechanism of action of drugs and translating it into future therapies for new indications in immune diseases/malignancies.
Actively participate in internal and external scientific meetings by presenting and critically evaluating the science and contributing to projects.
Initiate and perform in-house cutting edge research, take a leadership role in the development programs, and establish collaborations with leading academic research groups and CROs.
6+ years combined industry and postdoctoral experience in cellular immunology drug discovery and development
Track record of effective management of immunology/cancer projects with ability to troubleshoot, significant expertise of drug development in the cancer immunology/autoimmune disease field.
An excellent track record of publications
Broadly trained in T cell and B cell immunology, pathology, translational medicine and cancer biology with the ability to integrate in vitro and in vivo pharmacology.
Strong demonstration of ability to self-initiate hypotheses, design, manage and carry out studies.
Expertise in multi-colored flow cytometry is a must
Experience in syngeneic and/or transgenic cancer models is essential
Experience in cellular Immunology studies


Immunology Ph.D with postdoctoral experience and 2-5 years of productive industry experience in immunology/pharmacology.
Expertise in immune-oncology and clear understanding of cellular mechanisms and in vivo animal models.  Ability to investigate cellular mechanisms and their applications to proof-of-principle as well as disease relevant models.
