Job Description

To underpin our commitment to bring safe and transformative medicines to patients, we are growing our highly innovative Translational Systems Biology group at Amgen. Our mission is to ensure that both the drugs we develop and drug targets we pursue are safe and that side effects are minimized or eliminated. To achieve this we are applying a variety of human in vitro approaches (including human genetics and cell, molecular and structural biology techniques) to develop assays that can predict or elucidate mechanisms leading to drug safety issues. In addition to working broadly to support pipeline projects, we are also developing novel methodologies for assessing the safety of our drug targets in human systems with the long-term goal of being able to reduce the use of animals in regulatory filings.

We are seeking a talented Scientist with expertise in human genetics, functional genomics, and related bioinformatics and computational biology methods to join our growing group. The successful candidate will play a hands on role as part of our human genetics and functional genomics efforts with a focus on drug safety.

Key responsibilities

Drive experimental and computational efforts focused on using human genetics and functional genomic datasets to a) elucidate the biology of targets we are pursuing so as to inform the safety profile of drugging a particular axis and contribute this information to project teams and b) identify key variants and genes underlying concerning phenotypes we wish to avoid during drug development and provide opportunities for predictive safety assay development within the group

Interface directly with project teams and key stakeholders within Amgen to ensure the appropriate and timely interpretation of relevant datasets

Propose innovative solutions for the group's scientific challenges

Provide mentorship for research assistants and postdoctoral research fellows as appropriate

Integrate work tightly with additional efforts within the group focused on biochemical, structural biology and cell/molecular biology approaches to drug safety assessment

Represent the Translational Systems Biology group internally and externally through presentations, publications, networks, collaborations and conferences


Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree


Master's degree and 4 years of Scientific experience


Bachelor's degree and 6 years of Scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD with 2+ years of human genetic and functional genomic research experience with a focus on therapeutic target discovery or drug development

Demonstrated ability to design and lead human genetics, functional genomics, or computational biology studies (with a variety of study designs) delivering novel and actionable findings relevant to drug development

Expertise with multiple molecular genetic approaches including chip-typing, WES & WGS, Sanger, custom capture targeted sequencing, etc. as well as other functional genomic technologies (e.g. microarrays, RNASeq, etc)

Experience with large human genetic data sets such as ExAC, GTEx, dbGaP, etc.

Fluency in a statistical programming environment (e.g. R, Matlab), a scripting language (e.g. Python, C++), and the Unix command line

Understands the advantages and limitations of various types of human genetic datasets (e.g. GWAS, Mendelian genetics) and has hands on experience in using public human genetic and genomic databases.

Familiarity with machine learning, natural language processing, relational databases, and the use of ontologies in biomedical informatics

Excellent record of independent research demonstrated by a strong publication record in top tier journals

Comfort working in a highly interactive environment with frequent collaboration and brainstorming
