Description

: The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Sandler-Moore Mass Spectrometry (SMMS) Core Facility has an immediate opening for a scientist at the Assistant Specialist level. The successful candidate will support proteomics research activities that include sample preparation, antibody assays, protein and peptide HPLC separations, and mass spectrometry techniques. The position requires very strong wet chemical bench skills and analytical instrumentation expertise (operation, maintenance and troubleshooting). Major scientific responsibilities will include sample preparation, mass spectrometry data acquisition and processing, operation and maintenance of HPLC systems, and day-to-day support of project investigators. The incumbent will document experiments, results, and findings in a laboratory notebook; present work at the weekly facility laboratory meetings; participate in the writing of technical reports, SOPs, and analytical method protocols. In addition the candidate will be responsible for, along with other staff, assisting with general laboratory upkeep. The UCSF SMMS Core Facility mass spectrometers include a 5600 TripleTOF, LTQ XL and LTQ Orbitrap Velos both equipped with ETD, 4000 QTRAP, and a Synapt G2 HDMS. All ESI mass spectrometers are interfaced with nano-2D HPLC systems.

Requirements

The qualified individual will have a BS or MS in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, or biochemistry and have 1-2 years experience operating preparative HPLC systems and LCMS systems with an emphasis on proteomics applications. In addition, the candidate should have experience in protein sample preparation techniques such as chemical labeling, SDS-PAGE, and in-gel and solution proteolytic digestion protocols. Excellent computer skills are required which include proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and familiarity with working within a LIMS environment. Experience with bioinformatics approaches including protein database interrogation is not required; however candidates with this expertise will be favored. The candidate must be a highly organized detail oriented self-starter and be able to work independently, with limited supervision, and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast paced environment.
