Job Description

JDRF is the leading, global, public charity focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. The mission of JDRF is to accelerate life-changing breakthrough therapies to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications.  Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded close to $2 billion in research to hasten the translation of novel academic research into treatments that have a meaningful impact in the day-to-day lives of people with T1D.  JDRF supports research at premier institutions in the US and in over 17 countries.  Past JDRF research efforts have helped to significantly improve the care of people with this disease, and have expanded the critical scientific understanding of T1D.

The Senior/Director of Research within the JDRF research department is a newly created scientific leadership position designed to drive the successful execution of JDRF’s strategic research plan for accelerating the development and delivery of transformative treatments – drugs and devices – for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).  The Senior/Director is expected to deliver on all activities associated with the clinical translation of promising leads.  The candidate is expected to possess the skills, vision and desire to explore and implement new approaches that will not only accelerate the science leading to improved treatments for those with T1D but develop plans for translation of scientific discoveries across subsequent stages of the pharmaceutical and medical development and delivery pipeline.  The candidate must have in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical drug and/or device development, a deep understanding of the current competitive therapeutic landscape and have demonstrated experience in managing direct reports and project teams.  Background in diabetes research and/or medical device development is a plus.
Examples of research priority areas will include, but not be limited to, development of automated closed loop artificial pancreas systems, components for implantable closed loop systems, novel insulins and other therapies for adjunctive use, label expansion of therapies for T1D, drug based approaches for the prevention of hypoglycemia, and others.  Collectively, such therapies would lead to safe and improved glycemic and metabolic outcomes in people with T1D while reducing disease burden – thus delivering on the organizational mission and getting us closer to the vision of a world without T1D.
