North American Commercial is the ‘face’ of AstraZeneca and MedImmune to our many healthcare clients. They represent many of the most well recognized and respected products in the industry, and build strong relationships with healthcare professionals.

AstraZeneca holds a unique position in Respiratory Disease, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), with a range of differentiated potential medicines in development by leveraging novel combinations, biologics and devices. The pipeline also has a number of promising assets in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases within areas such as psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, systemic lupus and rheumatoid arthritis

The Sales Training Department in AstraZeneca (AZ) was originally focused on delivering learning and training for AZ’s pharmaceutical sales force. As the Commercial Learning Department (CLD) has emerged, its mandate is to influence content and deliver training to other parts of Commercial organization. As the new group expands and grows, the role of the Sales Trainer will also evolve. The Trainer will report to the Director of Respiratory Training, however, they may be deployed to another area within the department to respond to business needs. Trainers will be cross-trained on multiple brands to accommodate those business dynamics. The scope of this role will be to facilitate and implement training both within AstraZeneca’s headquarters and in the field, and includes travel on a regular basis. This training ranges from on boarding, product training, simulations week, and ongoing training related to promoted AZ brands, including launches. The trainer’s role also involves working collaboratively with colleagues across Sales Training, Brand teams and externally with co-promotion or outsource partners. Additionally, the role will be responsible for understanding the training needs of the field, and in conjunction with the Learning Management Office, will identify and implement approved solutions. This role will be assigned a specific geography to deploy training when not involved in headquarter based projects and initiatives.

The Sales Trainer is responsible for delivering training to sales teams to meet the needs identified in the sales training plan, including product specific training integrated with appropriate managed care concepts. Leading co-leading on boarding for new sales representatives, introducing them to the organization, providing them with initial learning materials, and facilitating their integration into the organization at the USBC. Leading or co-leading product sales training for existing portfolio and around new products and indications and selling skills training for new hire and existing sales representatives, as well as outsource and co-promotion partners. Working collaboratively with sales leaders to identify training needs and deliver approved solutions to sales representatives in the field. Providing feedback and coaching to sales representatives through “ride-alongs.” Working closely with peer Trainers to understand training integration touch points. Collaborating with internal CL&D partners, brand teams and external vendors to identify training needs and create and refine training content for sales organization. Working closely with brand teams to integrate brand strategy into all training content, both new hire and advanced. In tandem with CL&D Leadership, ensuring field leadership is aligned with PSS training initiatives. Identifying and sharing best practices for training that can be leveraged across other therapeutic areas.

Additionally, the Sales Trainer is responsible for aligning and implementing department and commercial strategies, plans, and initiatives, and models behaviors consistent with organizational culture, values, and policies. Ensuring compliance guidelines and accountabilities are clearly represented in all commercial learning material. Creating or identifying new learning concepts in order to continuously improve the quality and impact of training within AstraZeneca. Strong understanding of pharmaceutical sales representative role and it’s alignment to selling skills and product promotion. Ability to effectively present and communicate ideas in large groups as well as one-on-one sessions. Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor individuals on selling skills and product information. Strong collaboration and networking skills to be able to counsel and influence peers effectively. Strong project management experience to set and manage priorities, resources, goals, and initiatives. Extensive business acumen related to marketplace. Excellent writing, editing and communication skills. Ability to establish and meet deadlines, work under pressure and handle multiple priorities. Ability to communicate effectively among diverse groups. Ability to adapt and promote change.



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and organizational skills
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in pharmaceutical sales or healthcare; preferably in respiratory or respiratory biologics
  • Experience in training, curriculum design, and delivery, preferred
  • Thorough understanding of market dynamics within the respiratory therapeutic area, preferred
  • Demonstrated consistent success as a Pharmaceutical Sales Specialist, preferred
