The Department of Biostatistics within the UW School of Public Health has an outstanding opportunity for a Research SCIENTIST/Engineer Senior – PhD level Biostatistician.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Center for Biomedical Statistics (CBS) has an outstanding opportunity for a PhD level biostatistician. The CBS is seeking an individual who is interested in collaborating with investigators on a wide variety of projects. The CBS coordinates statistical collaboration with investigators and trainees of the Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS, www.iths.org) as well as the greater UW medical and public health research community.  Members of the CBS provide collaborators advice on statistical methods appropriate to their projects and ongoing training in biostatistics to ITHS investigators and trainees.  CBS members also play a pivotal, collaborative role in developing the ITHS by identifying key research issues that require intensive statistical investigation.

Additionally, the biostatistician will provide focused longer-term collaboration on any number of ongoing projects that the CBS coordinates. The CBS is currently actively engaged with investigators and projects in areas such as health services, genomics, orthopaedics, nephrology, pediatrics, radiology, and urology. The role of the biostatistician on such projects may range from general day-to-day consultation, to extensive statistical analysis, to collaboratively writing and publishing scientific manuscripts. The CBS also supports systems for data coordination on a number of ongoing prospective research studies and clinical trials. This biostatistician would also have opportunities to become involved with the day-to-day conduct of operating clinical research studies.

Key Duties:
-- Provide consultation and collaboration to investigators who require help study design, grant development, electronic data capture, study implementation, or data analysis
-- Develop and apply statistical methods for projects involving biomedical data
-- Teach short courses and workshops related to the application of statistical methods
-- Critically evaluate proposed research designs, study aims, and suggest design improvements
-- Assist in the preparation and writing of grant applications and collaborative manuscripts
-- Analyze data on a regular or ad-hoc basis and provide an appropriate interpretation of the results
-- Provide sample size calculations or estimation of statistical power for research study designs
-- Actively participate in the development and conduct of research studies
-- Access and integrate data from multiple databases, including matching data records
-- Participate in a periodic review process of small pilot grant applications
-- Actively participate in research group meetings that may require travel to offsite locations

REQUIREMENTS:

* PhD in Statistics or Biostatistics and six years or more of experience either in an academic teaching or applied environment.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as the person in this position will closely interact with clinical researchers in the design, conduct, and analyses of studies.

* Knowledge of or a strong capacity to learn specialized statistical or data management skills with clinical trial, genetic/genomic, and electronic health record data.

* Experienced in one or more statistical software packages (e.g. R, STATA, SAS, S- Plus, SPSS).

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED:

* You have a degree of confidence that allows you to effectively communicate with researchers who have a broad range of backgrounds and statistical knowledge.

* You prefer interacting with people, rather than working in isolation. Yet, you are able to work independently with occasional supervision.

* You feel comfortable writing technical ideas to a non-technical audience.

* As a graduate student, you might have optionally sought out additional advanced applied statistics coursework; you desire to learn more applied analysis methods.

Condition of Employment:
A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification may be required prior to hire.
