The Department of Genome Sciences is comprised of 27 labs addressing leading edge questions in biology and medicine by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches taking advantage of genomic information now available for a host of species.  The Department of Genome Sciences is making major contributions in the application of genome science to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and well-being.

Genome Sciences is a collaborative department supported by very different academic disciplines.  We work with a multitude of Program Investigators (PIs) in departments both on the UW campus as well as worldwide. The department has gone through significant expansion since its beginning in 2001 with annual grant expenditures doubling between FY08 and FY10 and federal awarding in FY10 of $44M.  The department has 41 core training, teaching, and research faculty.

The Northwest Genomics Center (NWGC) in the Department of Genome Science is involved in various research programs that require the processing of over thousands of samples per year, and has a focus on the identification of DNA variants in human populations. The NWGC also provides service to the University and other local labs as a cost center. The Research SCIENTIST/Engineer Senior will lead the laboratory methods Research and Development team for the NWGC.

The Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington has an outstanding opportunity for a Research SCIENTIST/Engineer Senior (RSE Sr) in the Northwest Genomics Center.

Core responsibilities include the following:

• Develop and implement laboratory methods for high-throughput next-generation sequencing library construction. Projects include exome and targeted capture, genome, RNA and multiplexed sequencing. Supervisory approval and technical guidance will be provided by the lab PI.
• Independently manage multiple significant projects to meet deadlines and goals (i.e., plan, coordinate and manage implementation of projects).
• In coordination with the sequencing and bioinformatics teams, work to enhance current methods and develop innovative new approaches.
• Supervise the work of junior RSE on assigned projects and mentor staff in development of technical, project, and business development skills.
• Familiarize and understand the broad strategic objectives of the NWGC
• Maintain existing and develop new relationships with collaborators.
• Contribute to grant, paper and report writing
• Participate in presentations to internal and external collaborators.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a depth of management experience and established credibility in the specified field of research. He/she will manage people, projects, and relationships with University and non-University parties. The RSE Senior will have a high level of organization, commitment, the ability to work alone and in complex teams, expertise in laboratory protocols, and expertise in DNA sequencing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Independently manage multiple significant projects to meet deadlines and goals (i.e., plan, coordinate and manage implementation of projects).
• In coordination with the sequencing and bioinformatics teams, work to enhance current methods and develop innovative new approaches.
• Familiarize and understand the broad strategic objectives of the NWGC
• Maintain existing and develop new relationships with collaborators.
• Contribute to grant, paper and report writing
• Participate in presentations to internal and external collaborators.
• Attend Genome Sciences and University meetings, retreats, status updates, orientations and planning days when necessary.
• Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

Hire, train, complete performance evaluations and make recommendations for disciplinary action as needed. The Research SCIENTIST/Engineer Senior will be responsible for supervising the work of RSE technicians on assigned projects and will mentor staff in development of technical, project, and business development skills. The RSE Senior will manage staff and resources to optimize efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Requirements:
•     PhD degree in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Life Sciences, or related field.
•     Minimum 6 years of laboratory experience; must have expertise in laboratory protocols for high-throughput, next-generation sequencing to include laboratory methods and evaluating new sequencing technologies.
•     Minimum 4 years of experience with whole exome/genome sequencing and high-throughput laboratory work.
•     Must have comprehensive knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, and/or chemistry;
•     Must have demonstrated expertise in genomics.
•     The ability to advance state-of-the-art research in next-generation sequencing.
•     The ability to develop relationships and serve as a resource to the NWGC, UW and external collaborators.
•     Minimum 4 years of experience working with RNA and DNA libraries specifically for next-generation sequencing.
•     Minimum 4 years of managerial experience. Must be able to lead and guide the work of a research team with minimal supervision effectively achieving goals.
•     Minimum 4 years of project management experience with demonstrated success in meeting goals and deadlines.
•     Highly organized.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
