Job Description

The Biology department at Calithera Biosciences is seeking a highly motivated individual who will be involved in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments evaluating compounds for tumor metabolism and immuno-oncology programs. Duties will include performing in vitro assays for lead development, mechanism of action studies, and cell culture. This position will require knowledge of tumor biology and tumor immunology, with a particular focus on metabolic pathways and cancer biology.

Duties and responsibilities:
•   Assist in compound screening efforts, lead optimization, and detailed cell biological characterization of hits/leads to facilitate identification of small molecules with acceptable therapeutic properties.
•   Develop and implement cell-based assays including co-culture assays with immune cells to support drug discovery efforts.
•   Use cell-based assay to evaluate drug combinations and mechanisms of drug synergy.
•   Use biochemical assays to evaluate small molecule mechanisms of action.
•   Work with supervisor to identify key experimental questions and solve experimental problems.
•   Assist in the maintenance of tissue culture facilities and provide cell culture support for xenograft studies.
•   Analyze and interpret results and data.
•   Maintain well-written, up-to-date and accurate research notebooks detailing work undertaken.
•   Effectively communicate ongoing work and findings to others.

•   B.S. or M.S. in Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology or related field with 2-5 years of experience in an oncology or immuno-oncology environment.
•   Proficiency in western blotting and plate-based biochemical and cell-based assays for drug discovery efforts.
•   Demonstrated hands-on experience with designing, executing and analyzing cell-based mechanism of action experiments.
•   Highly motivated with excellent problem solving abilities.
•   Breadth and flexibility to adapt to changing project needs.
•   Good communication, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills are essential.
•   Preference will be given to candidates with a background in immuno-oncology and experience in pharmacodynamic assay development.
