Description

   At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Research Associate/ Senior Research Associate, Culture Curator to join our Synthetic Genomics Sciences team in a fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.

   Under supervision by scientist, curate a large collection of phototrophic and heterotrophic eukaryotic microorganisms, archive new isolates in compliance with defined standards of quality, and provide viable reanimated cultures to scientific staff on request.

Requirements

Required Skills
-Prepare master and working cell banks of photosynthetic and heterotrophic microorganisms according to Standard Operating Procedures.
-Provide 18s PCR and taxonomic ID validation of cultures.
-Perform quality control assays to determine if cultures are axenic and unispecific.
-Provide cultures to scientists upon request and maintain sufficient inventory of master and working cell banks to enable R&D programs to operate without interruption.
-Develop methods as necessary to ensure viability and integrity of the culture collection.
-Utilize LIMS system to properly identify and trace all samples.
-Prepare duplicate archives as requested and transfer to offsite bio-storage facility according to Standard Operating Procedures.
-Adjust responsibilities as requested by supervisor to adequately support commercialization of products and partnerships.

Required Experience
-A Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology, biology, ecology, or related biological science degree is required.
-A minimum of 3 years post-baccalaureate experience is required, preferably in an industrial or microorganism culture collection facility setting.
-High degree of ability to maintain focus on detail.
-Excellence and pride in quality of work that may be highly repetitive.
-Knowledge of and ability to apply sterile technique to ensure integrity of samples.
-Experience with phototrophic or fastidious microorganisms and demonstrated ability to maintain viable cultures of the same.
-Strong interpersonal communication skills and dedication to working as an integral member of a large team with diverse skill levels.  Educate and inform team members as necessary.  Provide written or PowerPoint presentations of work as requested by supervisor.
-Knowledge and proper application of lab safety protocols, handling of hazardous materials and bio-materials.
