Job Description

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Clinical Services Program’s (CSP) primary mission is to perform sequential studies using samples obtained from patients with cancer, AIDS, chronic granulomatous disease or other diseases associated with immunologic dysfunction, as well as to monitor viral load in patients with HIV.

JOB DESCRIPTION/BASIC FUNCTION
The Research Associate III will be:
Responsible for the production and shipments of specimen collection kits for a clinical project
Responsible for the receipt and processing of saliva samples for buccal cell storage.  Samples are unpacked, accessioned, processed, entered into the specimen tracking database, and transferred to the repository for long-term storage
Responsible for the packaging of specimens according to transport regulations
Responsible for specimen data verifications and data manipulation using Excel and the BSI specimen inventory database
Responsible for maintaining chemical inventory listing, arranging for hazardous waste pickup
Responsible for performing work according to approved Standard Operating Procedures.  Work is performed in a BL-2 safety environment
Responsible for the movement of supplies between locations, on an as needed basis.  This requires fleet driver training for the use of a fleet passenger van
Responsible for the supervision of 1-3 laboratory and shipping staff at this location

Requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis).
Eight (8) years of related biomedical research experience, including prior experience working under aseptic conditions, writing SOPs, and training others on procedures
Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
Must have a clean driving record to be eligible for Fleet Driver certification
Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
Master’s degree in biological sciences preferred
Prior supervisory experience
Prior project management experience or demonstrated success at leading multiple laboratory-based projects simultaneously, excellent organizational skills
Advanced experience with Excel, Word, PowerPoint
Prior experience with BSI specimen inventory database or relational databases
IATA certification for biological hazards and dry ice
Prior experience training others on safety-related topics
Duties may be expanded to include whole blood fractionation.  Prior experience with whole blood processing strongly desired
