OBJECTIVES:

Under limited supervision, supports TCAL drug discovery projects through the chemical synthesis of biologically active small-molecules and synthetic intermediates.  

•   Conducts multi-step organic synthesis, purification and
     characterization of organic compounds in support of project goals
•   Uses standard tools and equipment associated with medicinal
     chemistry field
•   Performs techniques and experiments using scientific methods
•   With minimal - moderate guidance, detailed direction and
     instruction, executes experiments with appropriate controls;
     decisions are typically narrow in scope and may impact a task
     outcome or workflow of the team
•   Able to prioritizes a number of tasks and techniques through to
     completion with quality results
•   Identifies moderately complex obstacles to progress
•   Interprets data and documents results
•   Keeps an accurate, comprehensible, concise notebook in accordance
     with company policy
•   Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative
     analyses
•   Writes experimental procedures for patent applications and
     scientific reports
•   Maintains lab equipment and supplies as needed
•   Maintains a safe and organized lab bench
•   Investigates new synthetic routes with minimum supervision
•   Independently navigates on-line databases such as Beilstein and
     ACD to perform reaction and raw material searches
•   Develops understanding of primary SAR
•   May make independent synthesis suggestions based on SAR/SBDD data
•   Contributes to the design, execution and interpretation of
     experiments that contribute to project strategies
•   Investigates, creates, designs and develops new methods and
     technologies for project advancement in collaboration with supervisor
•   Independently troubleshoots organic chemistry experiments to reach
     desired goals
•   Analyzes biological assay data to understand structure-activity
     relationship trends
•   Communicates with colleagues effectively
•   Participates on cross-functional teams
•   May present data to cross-functional project team; may present
     data/posters to external research or scientific community





Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

•   MS in Chemistry with 0-3 years of experience in organic synthesis,
     OR BS/BA in Chemistry with 2-5  years experience in organic synthesis
•   Clear general knowledge of chemistry
•   Good oral and written communication skills
•   Demonstrated ability to solve scientific problems creatively and
     effectively
•   Proficiency with chemistry drawing software (e.g., Chemdraw) and
     MS office applications
•   Strong knowledge of lab equipment such as rotary evaporators, NMR,
     analytical and prep HPLC, LC-MS, chromatography equipment, etc.


LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

•   None required


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

•   Manual dexterity required to operate standard laboratory equipment
•   Carrying, handling and reaching for objects
•   Exposure to hazardous/toxic/dangerous chemicals
•   Prolonged standing in the laboratory


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

•   May travel to scientific conferences and attend career development
     training courses
•   Requires up to 1% travel
