Job Description

Zymergen is hiring a Research Associate with experience in sample management to generate biological stocks and maintain Zymergen’s strain inventory. The Research Associate will collaborate with different groups to develop strain banking and QC procedures for a variety of different microbes. They will also collaborate with our automation team to generate automated procedures for strain banking.

This is a brand new group with zero team members and there will be plenty of opportunity for personal growth and impact in shaping the group’s future state.  This group will eventually be responsible for cell banking/QC of all banks made at Zymergen. This means this person will work with a wide variety of microbes used for screening at Zymergen in addition to commercial scale production at client sites. This group can grow in the next year as we continue to gain projects.  In order to scale the team and workflows effectively, team members will be responsible for working with Technology to develop data science tools and workflow tools such as Polaris. They will also work closely with our Scientists to intake new workflows and help to improve them.

Immediate responsibilities include:

•   Generate strain banks of a variety of different microbes
•   Develop growth, stocking and QC procedures
•   Develop storage procedures
•   Maintain master stocks

The ideal candidate will be meticulous, well organized and collaborative. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape best practices within the company.



Education - BSc. Microbiology, Biology, or similar field plus the following experience:

•   2 – 3+ years of strain repository management/ sample management
•   Experience cultivating a variety of different microbes
•   Managing multiple day workflows.
•   Generating and following SOPs.
•   Use of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and automation
•   Familiarity with statistical concepts
