Research Associate –Strain improvement (Hayward)

Aurora Algae is currently seeking a Research Associate reporting to the Director of Biofuels Strain Improvement.  

JOB SUMMARY:
RA will be responsible for participating in the development and execution of high-throughput screening of algae strains for desirable chemical characteristics.  Job includes operating robotic fluid handlers, gas chromatographs and other analytical methods, assisting in development of GC methods, analyzing output data, and preparing related reports.  Established data, reports, and previous results will be used to identify inappropriate variances and concerns; inconsistent results will be reported to supervisor.  RA will take part in planning and organizing details of experimental work.  Participation in group meetings is required, with some data presentation possible.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:
•   Design and execute and improve growth and screening techniques for strain improvements campaigns
•   Evaluate strain performances against commercially relevant physiology parameters in microtitter plates and in medium-scale systems
•    Design and execute physiology experiments to discover, evaluate or validate new trait targets for genetic manipulation or cultivation best practices
•   Collect, analyze, and document experimental results
•   Reviewing data in compliance with existing requirements
•   Maintaining a safe and clean working environment
•   Completing of log sheets and laboratory notebooks
•   Performing other related duties as assigned

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:
•   BS in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Plant Physiology Chemistry, or related field
•   2-5 years’ experience in an Lab environment or related experience
•   Theoretical knowledge in Molecular Biology or related field
•   Experience in high throughput techniques and equipment is desired
•   Working knowledge of standard safety protocols
•   Self-motivated, reliable, attentive to detail
•   Work effectively in a team environment
•   Good problem-solving skills
•   Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
•   Strong organizational, interpersonal and oral communication skills
