Principal Objective(s):
The Regional Medical Scientist (RMS) is a field-based medical expert who will strategically develop, maintain and advance scientifically-based relationships with national and regional opinion leaders (OLs), both established and emerging, in therapeutic areas of interest to ViroPharma.   This position will be responsible for DC/MD/WV/VA/TN/DE/NC.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• Goals will be accomplished by the development and execution of a strategic plan supportive of Medical Affairs and ViroPharma goals, and by working in collaboration with internal partners.    
• Responsible for developing creative and innovative approaches to meet the educational, scientific and research needs of OLs.  
• Maintain state of the art current awareness of clinical practice, therapeutic and scientific knowledge, and business intelligence related to ViroPharma areas of interest through interactions with OLs, attendance of medical meetings, and literature reading.
• Support company research programs including ViroPharma Phase I-IV studies and Investigator-Initiated Studies.  
• Develop and maintain professional relationships with Opinion Leaders and academic centers in therapeutic areas of interest or potential interest to ViroPharma.  
• Develop tactics for communicating complex scientific information to the healthcare community.
 o RMS tactics include educational, research, and publication with an emphasis on providing appropriate scientific and technical support
• Disseminate and convey complex medical/scientific information to professional and internal audiences.
• Identify and support research opportunities with appropriate health care professionals as they relate to clinical and non-clinical studies via investigator-initiated protocols.  
• Seek/uncover data that may have potential for publication &/or abstract presentation.
• Support Clinical Operations in conduct of ViroPharma clinical development studies.
• Provide necessary clinical/scientific support for products in third-party payer environment.  
• Present scientific evidence in support of guideline development, treatment protocols and drug utilization.
• Attend medical conferences to learn, interact with OLs, staff Medical Affairs booth, and generate meeting reports of interest to internal colleagues.
• Ethically provide business intelligence.
• Participate in internal projects to support the department.
• Assist with educational content, medical content review and professional communication materials.
• Provide support for answering unsolicited medical questions, adverse event follow through and other clinically related medical information issues.
• Populate and maintain an opinion leader database management system.
• Perform administrative duties and project tasks in a timely manner as assigned.
• Alert to key market changes by listening to health professionals, competitors and government regulators.
• Successfully manage projects by meeting assigned benchmarks.

Requirements and Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum of three ( 3) years pharmaceutical  industry experience with at least two (2) years as an RMS equivalent; or minimum five (5) years clinical experience, preferred

Technology:
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Capability to learn new software in a timely manner

Education:
• PharmD., Ph.D., or MD preferred

Other
• Ability to work irregular hours, travel and attend weekend professional programs.
• Domestic & International Travel
• Valid Driver’s License
