Description

   At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Recovery Engineer to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.

   Recovery Engineer will provide leadership for research and development for heterotrophic and phototrophic processes for large-scale food which meet quality, cost and process reliability objectives and participate in a multidisciplinary technical team designing, implementing and scaling-up robust, economic and innovative processes related to growth and recovery.

Requirements

Required Skills
-Develops robust bioprocess for cultivation, harvest and product recovery
-Work closely with lab scientists, pilot plant operations, and the engineering team to translate laboratory process to pilot plant, demonstration and commercial scale, and optimize process conditions in each facility
-Defines process requirements and engages external engineering system and process equipment partners to design and assess alternative process flow sheets and equipment capable of achieving process requirements
-Conceive ideas to reduce the cost of recovery of microalgae product, and develop and implement experimental plans to test and evaluate feasibility of ideas
-Develop mass and energy balances, process flow and instrumentation diagrams, simulations and cost models.
-Develop reports and present finding on research projects.
-Demonstrates a solid scientific proficiency, creativity, ability to collaborate effectively with others, and independent thought processes.
-Maintain detailed and complete lab notebook.  Participate and follow through on IP filings.
-Work closely with business development and engineering teams on the techno-economic assessment of the end-to-end process and financial projections
-Provide process engineering perspective for siting, designing and constructing demonstration and production facilities
-In collaboration with Director of Regulatory Affairs, interact with local and state agencies with respect to any required permits and ensures compliance with all regulations
-Provide key assumptions for building budgets, revenue projections and business plans
-Ensure staff compliance with all safety and environmental policies and practices
-Supervise and guide the professional development of direct reports

Required Experience

-MS 5+ years industry experience, or BS 8+ in Chemical, Biochemical, Mechanical, Civil, or Agricultural Engineering
-Experience with cultivation and processing of photosynthetic microorganisms is preferred, but not required
-Successful track record and experience in bioprocess scale-up and development, process and economic analysis
-Knowledge of computer-based monitoring and control systems
-Direct experience of design and construction of larger scale facilities
-Experience managing personnel, subcontractors, and working interface with external engineering or equipment partners, or government agencies
-Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers
-Must be able to bend, stoop, reach high and low and be capable of lifting and carrying 50 lbs.
-Must be able to travel up to 25% time, work extended hours and weekends occasionally.
