Vertex Pharmaceuticals is offering an exciting opportunity for a talented, highly motivated and creative Quantitative Pharmacologist to join our Research Team in San Diego. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in expanding our ability to study disease biology in the context of whole cell systems by building and applying  mathematical models based on quantitative data to support drug discovery. The successful candidate must have demonstrated expertise integrating experimental, computational and mathematical approaches to model biological systems, and will be integrated into a fast-paced multi-disciplinary drug discovery team,  so excellent communication and people skills are essential.  

Key Responsibilities:
•   Integrates quantitative measurements and creates mathematical models based on quantitative data to build and test mechanistic questions.
•   Reconstructs and models how biological systems react under different conditions, disease states and drug treatments (including small molecule and nucleic acid).
•   Builds translational understanding of preclinical biological systems to responses in humans.
•   Critically analyzes and interprets data, and effectively documents and communicates results to diverse audiences. Informs strategic and tactical considerations in designing and optimizing experiments and assays.  
•   Works effectively in a multi-disciplinary, matrixed team environment. Has excellent organizational and communication skills with a well-developed ability to multi-task and make critical decisions.


Minimum Qualifications:
•   Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Physiology, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, or a related field with 4+ years’ experience and a track record in one or more of the following: Quantitative Pharmacology, Systems Biology, Mechanistic Modeling, Disease Modeling, Pathway Modeling, (Bio/chemo)informatics, Biostatistics, and Data Science
•   Demonstrated extensive expertise in scientific computation methods and software such as Matlab, R, Python
•   Integrative experience and a driven approach to the use of theoretical, computational and experimental research to model and simulate biological systems
•   Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate to a wide range of target audiences

Preferred Qualifications:
•   Hands on experience designing, implementing and troubleshooting wet lab experiments is desired; particularly using cutting edge molecular biology, electrophysiology, cell culture and imaging protocols
•   Experience in pharmacometrics and pharmacogenomics, as well as pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modeling is a plus
•   A comprehensive strategic and tactical understanding of drug discovery and development in a biotech setting
•   Ability to navigate and be successful in a fast-paced, highly matrixed work environment
