Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a talented, proactive, energetic team player to join the Research Project Management Team in San Diego.  The temporary Research Project Manager will have the appropriate experience and scientific background to manage initiatives and projects from early research up to development candidate stage.   The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of small molecule drug discovery and development and understand the science and processes to bring a product from the research stage into clinical development.
Key Responsibilities Include:
•   Manage research project teams to execute on project plans
•   Partner with Project Leaders to run project meetings, communicate progress, coordinate and prioritize activities and identify and resolve potential issues
•   Organize and manage project related information, such as goals, resourcing, budget, and timelines
•   Establish and coordinate subteams   as required
•   Develop integrated cross-functional program plans spanning early research to the IND/CTA stage.


•    An advanced degree in Biology, Chemistry or Life Sciences required, PhD preferred.
•     4+ years of direct PM experience in small molecule research and drug development
•      Experience managing cross-functional global project teams of large scope and importance simultaneously
•     In-depth knowledge and understanding of the drug discovery and development process for small molecules
•     Experience in the concurrent management of interrelated research activities, including the following: lead optimization, candidate selection, CMC including scale up and formulation, PK/PD, pharmacology, etc.
•     Experience with managing project budgets and interfacing with Finance
•      Strong facilitation, organizational, leadership and time management skills in a matrix environment
•     Team-oriented, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, i.e. collaboration, conflict management, and negotiation
•     Evidence of excellent planning, coordination and brokering of cooperation between team members from different backgrounds and disciplines
•     Expert user of MS Project, MS Project Server and SharePoint
•     Extensive advanced computer skills (Power Point, Excel, Word, MS Outlook)
