Job Description


BACKGROUND:

Biocom is the largest, most experienced leader and advocate for California’s life science sector. We work on behalf of more than 900 members to drive public policy, build an enviable network of industry leaders, create access to capital, introduce cutting-edge STEM education programs, and create robust value-driven purchasing programs.

Biocom is a leader in cluster development and industry acceleration. Biocom historically has served Southern California from its headquarters in San Diego, however, with a rapidly growing Northern California membership base and increasing demand for services and support for these members, Biocom is opening a new office in the SF Bay Area that will have responsibility for expanding Biocom’s operations in the area.  The Bay Area office will take the lead in local membership recruitment and retention, local and regional policy efforts, collaboration with partner organizations in the area, events and networking, with a focus on connecting, fostering and growing the life science cluster.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The new Bay Area office is seeking an experienced Program Manager to assist with planning, organizing, managing and coordinating a variety of programs that support the goals of the expansion of Biocom into the Bay Area, collaboration with partner organizations in the area, events, marketing/communications, networking and local membership recruitment and retention.  The Program Manager will play a key role in the effort to help develop the local life science cluster and would ideally already be plugged into this ecosystem.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with Director of Business Development, Bay Area to

•   Develop and implement a plan to engage with the local life science industry, including established companies, startup companies, universities and research institutions
•   Develop and implement strategies to encourage San Diego and Los Angeles membership to connect more with the Bay Area
•   Utilize Salesforce database and other tools to manage the large volume of data related to organizational growth
•   Perform market research to support initiatives, strategic planning and internal/external promotion of these efforts
•   Coordinate with headquarters staff to develop marketing and communications strategies and plans
•   Coordinate with headquarters staff on event planning for the SF Bay Area
     o   Coordinate the logistical aspects of planning, managing, execution, and evaluation of Biocom Bay Area events, meetings and educational programs and working as necessary with other staff, presenters, hotels, and appropriate suppliers to build a positive and professional image for all events and meetings
     o   Develop plans and timetables in coordination with other staff to ensure that such meetings, events and educational programs are implemented on a timely basis and are widely and innovatively promoted to appropriate audiences in accordance with strategic objectives for these events,  ensuring that such events are produced within established budgets
     o   Function as liaison for Biocom members with respect to event, meeting and conference logistical information to ensure that event information is available on a timely basis for posting to the web and for promoting the events through print pieces when appropriate
     o   Support the Events team and Director of Business Development, Bay Area, in working with local planning committees to ensure their success by handling the administrative and logistical details of such meetings and distribution lists of committee members
     o   Manage event registration site (CRM) and serve as Lead Registrar onsite and closing out all expenses on each event
     o   Support headquarters Events team with sponsorship efforts including implementation of sponsor benefits, post event evaluations and other duties as needed
•   Maintain the Bay Area twitter handle, coordinating Tweets with HQ
•   Coordinate with local partner organizations
•   Support headquarters staff on local and regional advocacy efforts
•   Support efforts of Bay Area office membership and purchasing group staff as needed
•   Other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Business Development, Bay Area

Requirements


Education:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major related to the specific knowledge, skills and abilities described above.

Experience: Minimum five years of experience directly related to the industry and duties and responsibilities specified.

•   Clear and thorough communications skills, ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences
•   Strong problem solving and decision making skills
•   Attention to detail and ability to coordinate complex programs in an organized fashion
•   Ability to establish good working relationships with others in a team environment
•   Ability to independently initiate, prioritize, and complete diverse tasks efficiently and in a well-organized fashion, and maintain a high level of productivity with minimal supervision
•   Must be able to interact and communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization as well as with external members, vendors and service providers
•   Experience creating and working with complex spreadsheets and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, HTML, Salesforce.com and Internet research

Some travel, particularly to headquarters and conferences.  Some work outside normal business hours, particularly around events and conferences.
