Job Description

The Program Director, UC Drug Discovery Consortium (UC DDC) will lead the development of this new Cross- Campus initiative. The UC DDC will support the development of early therapeutics projects towards the clinic with a network of drug discovery expertise (UC and external), seed funding and access to a wide range of UC Core facilities. UC DDC will support drug discovery related educational programs and will develop a strategy to ensure sustainability. The UC DDC development is initially supported by grant funding from UC Office of the President. Its sustainability will be dependent upon the effective development of industrial partnerships. The Program Director will be responsible for developing and implementing this strategy in discussion with the UC DDC Executive Board.

The Program Director UC DDC, will report directly to the Principal Investigator and campus Co-Pis from the partner campuses i.e. UCSF, UCI, UCSD, UCLA and UCD (UC DDC Executive Board). The Program Director will work with the Executive Board to focus on the development of a strategy for project evaluation, selection and awards and an approach for industry partnership.

Requirements

• Advanced degree in related area (e.g., PhD, PharmD, M.D., MBA) in biological sciences or chemistry or related area and five to ten years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

• Ten+ years relevant experience beyond postdoctoral research, including at least five years in pharma or biotech industry and at least five additional years in a related industry or at a disease foundation, non-profit, venture capital firm etc. and/or a combination of education and experience

• Experience in either alliance management, program or project management or business development

• In-depth academic background and experience in the drug discovery area including record of publications in related field(s)

• Advanced oral and written communication skills. Advanced skills analyzing information, problems, situations, policies or procedures to define the problem, need or objective

• Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results

• Highest standard of work ethics, team player, willing to taking on additional responsibilities in order to achieve team’s goals

• Proven ability to formulate solutions, new program development, alternative choices and implications for implementation

• Independent critical thinker. Results driven. Demonstrated cross-functional leadership in the organizations

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers and teams

• Demonstrated ability and experience at conceptualizing new initiatives, assessing opportunities and synergies, garnering stakeholder support to launch a new initiative and transition a startup program through different development phases
