POSITION SUMMARY

The position is intended as an entry-level position into protein product marketing and product management, with relevant technical experience and education, as well as business and marketing savvy, but not necessarily direct experience in marketing, product management or sales.
The Product Specialist is responsible for a product line or brand family (or a portion thereof) at Bio-Techne and will serve on a team that is charged with product line contribution as a business unit. (S)he will assist in defining, developing, deploying and defending relevant products and services that provide more value to the customer than the competitor, build a sustainable competitive advantage, and define measurable benefits to the business (i.e. profitability). (S)he will build and/or improve products from existing ideas, and help develop new ideas based on domain experience as well as contact with customers and prospects in the market. (S)he must possess a unique blend of business and technical savvy; passion, a big picture vision, and the drive to make that vision a reality. (S)he must enjoy spending time in the market to understand problems and develop solutions and marketing efforts that support the company’s overall strategy and goals.
The Product Specialist must be able to communicate with all areas of the company and marketplace, including Senior Management, Business Development, Marcom, Sales, Technical Service, Product Development, Operations, Finance, Regulatory and QA/QC, as well as customers, prospects, purchasing agents, etc. (S)he will serve as the internal and external evangelist for her/his product offering or research area and be the general expert on its use and positioning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

•   Become an expert with respect to the product offering, competitor and competitive offerings and relevant customers
•   Help to maintain a competitor profile including pricing, positioning, advantages/disadvantages and marketing activities/strategy
•   Monitor and analyze performance of assigned product(s), as well as customers and research areas, and be accountable to drive strategies to improve customer satisfaction, facilitate sales, and drive growth and profitability
•   Drive the core positioning and messaging for the product(s)
•   Seek input on current and potential products from internal and external stakeholders including sales, customer service, business units and customers on a regular basis, to monitor the voice of the customer (VOC) for the purpose of driving all decisions
•   Communicate with and receive input from Product Management, Product Development, Marketing Communications, Business Development, Executive teams, Key Opinion Leaders, customers, consultants and collaborators on a regular basis
•   Participate with Product Manager and help drive the focus and output of internal Focus Groups using information derived from above for the purposes of developing a product roadmap for development or in sourcing. Advise Marcom on campaigns; contribute to and monitor collateral design and content.
•   Produce accurate content for the website as new products are released
•   Develop sales tools and communicate sales strategy and value propositions to sales channels (internal and external), including appropriate technical and positioning training
•   Travel to represent the product(s) and company at trade shows and exhibits, as well as in front of customers, when required
•   Develop and implement launch plans with appropriate colleagues
•   Monitor and stay abreast of research trends
•   Follow company policies and practices as outlined in Handbook and follow guidelines regarding safety as outlined in the AWAIR, Chemical Hygiene and Exposure Control manuals
•   Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
•   BS in a Biological Science required
•   Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience working in the biotech or life sciences industry or academia
•   Relevant laboratory or technical experience preferred
•   Travel up to four times a year as required (international travel possible).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•   Basic, functional knowledge about the product(s) and their uses, competitor(s) and their product(s), and the marketplace, as well as the ability to gain in-depth knowledge
•   Aptitude in product/customer/sales analysis which will lead to defining successful strategies and launching outstanding products
•   A passion for the product(s) and company and a deep empathy for the customer and their needs, with the intelligence to combine and integrate various information into opportunities and strategies
•   Pre-disposition to a positive attitude set, including a firm belief in no excuses and holding nothing sacred in order to appropriately define success
•   Interpersonal relationship skills, leadership, and decisiveness to solicit key ideas and information and obtain alignment, as well as the confidence to make decisions regarding products and strategies
•   Ability to work independently and without constant direction to gain assistance from many in the organization, without direct authority over those individuals, in order to make the necessary decisions to drive product management projects and requirements
•   Proficient in planning, organization, problem solving and multi-tasking skills to complete assignments in a timely, efficient manner
•   Outstanding oral and written communication and presentation skills allowing the ability to communicate professionally across all layers of the organization as well as customer’s and prospect’s organizations
•   Proficient in the use of computer applications and software that allow for analysis and presentation of data as well as productivity (i.e. Microsoft Office, Salesforce.com), as well as ability to become proficient in proprietary databases and ERP solutions
•   Ability to handle sensitive and proprietary information with discretion and confidentiality
