The Product Knowledge Management Leader role resides in the Pharmaceutical Technology & Development Function in the operations SET area. The Pharmaceutical Technology & Development organization is a responsible for drug product design, development and technical support for commercial products. The MS&T (Manufacturing Science & Technology) group as part of Pharmaceutical Technology & Development provides the second line drug product technical support for AZ commercial products across the lifecycle. Technical support is provided for formulation, manufacture, analytics and testing related to chemistry, manufacturing and control of drug products. Types of support areas include drug product improvement projects, changes, investigations, regulatory responses new submissions, product robustness, risk and manufacturability. All of those activities generate & use essential product knowledge to ensure robust product performance. Manufacturing Science & Technology provide technical support is provided in the areas of formulation, manufacture, analytics and testing related to chemistry, manufacturing and control of drug products. Types of activities which require this support include drug product improvement projects, changes, investigations, regulatory responses new submissions, product robustness projects, risk and manufacturability assessments.

All of those activities generate & use essential product knowledge to ensure robust product performance. The management of the knowledge associated with drug products is critical for robust supply of drug products. Knowledge management is a key focus area which is critical for Operations to enable the understanding of our products and processes and is key for the communication of control strategies, product history files, and manufacturing strategies, getting to root cause quicker and understanding the impact of changes on drug product performance. It is an essential requirement to properly manage technical support for commercial products. The role of Product Knowledge Management Leader will be accountable and responsible for how product knowledge management is conducted in AstraZeneca Operations. This position is considered a matrix manager responsible at a project level with no direct reports. The remit of the role covers all AstraZeneca countries.

The Product Knowledge Management Manager is a key member of the Manufacturing Science & Technology organization who has responsibility for the following areas Strategic responsibilities:

Strategic Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the Operations Product Knowledge Management (PKM) strategy and evolution of the process across Operations sites and Technical Pharmaceutical Technology & Development functions
• Evaluate and develop knowledge analytics practices to support MST functions in the lifecycle management of AstraZeneca commercial drug products
• Support for harmonization and exploitation of knowledge management activities across AZ and AZB
• Promotion of knowledge sharing through the Product Knowledge Management business process and tool to enable seamless exchange of information across the product lifecycle from development through divestment
• Share experience across business units and networks
• Support other knowledge management goals within Pharmaceutical Technology & Development and Operations

Tactical Responsibilities

• Monitor and evaluate the Product Knowledge Management process and tool to drive continuous improvement through internal and external benchmarking, opportunities and programs
• Exploitation of Product Knowledge Management to support other enabling drug product support activities such as risk management and continued process verification
• Business Process Owner for Product Knowledge Management process and tool
o Leadership of the Product Knowledge Management Pharmaceutical Technology & Development Steering team and super user team
o Manage the budget for resource requirements for Product Knowledge Management tool business administration
• Drive the culture change for Product Knowledge Management and continuous improvement
• Maintain Product Knowledge Management visibility across all Ops sites
• Responsible for the training program and materials
• Provide support for functions and sites
• Collaboration with IT support functions for ensuring optimal system functionality
• Responsible for directing system administration resources
• Own project implementation at new sites

Skills Needed:

• Passion for knowledge management
• Lean six sigma skills – process development & management
• High level of project management skills to ensure appropriate planning and timely delivery of the projects
• Ability to influence senior leaders at the site and ensure a high level of site engagement
• Ability to work with Senior global IT staff to ensure delivery of the required IT support
• Able to network and influence at all levels.


• Bachelors of Science degree in disciplines such as Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Instructional Technology Management or other relevant science discipline
• 10+ years of related experience (after earning degree)
• 10+ years’ experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry
• Experience in drug product development and commercial lifecycle activities
• Awareness of business systems such as SAP, Trackwise, documentum, GLIMS, SharePoint, process intelligence systems etc.
• Proficiency in the use of MS SharePoint 2013
• Experience in managing content in a knowledge based system
• Demonstrated track record of driving culture change in large organizations
• Experience of developing and delivering knowledge sharing systems
• Excellent strategic thinking: Is able to develop and delivery strategies aligned with business objectives and external requirements
• Strong communication skills: Ability to influence and achieve consensus across many business units, ability to generate enthusiasm, ability to communicate across all levels of staff.
• Customer orientation focus: Is able to understand the different needs and requirements of the business units who use and generate product knowledge
• Curious: is curious to explore and test new technologies to analyze knowledge to drive technical support effectiveness and efficiency
• Drive for results: Is proactive and sets high standards and delivers against organization goals and objectives
• Collaboration: Can work collaboratively with others within and across functions to gain support and commitment to deliver product knowledge management
