Role Summary / Main Purpose

This Senior Scientist/Senior Manager/Principal Scientist - Imaging Core Facility Leader will work with other leaders within MedImmune’s research department to establish a new imaging core facility.  Subsequently, this individual will be responsible for ongoing management and oversight of the imaging facility in a heavily matrixed research organization.  The position will report into the Microbial Sciences division but will support non-clinical research in all Medimmune therapeutic and functional areas (Oncology, Cardiovascular-Metabolic, Respiratory-Inflammation-Autoimmunity, Microbial Sciences Antibody Discovery and Protein Engineering and Translational Sciences). The individual will serve as a point person for application of confocal and image analysis solutions as well as tissue imaging activities involving live animals, live cells, fixed samples, or dynamic cell culture systems. This individual will contribute to staff development, identification and implementation of process improvements, training of lab personnel and performance management against research and personal goals. The successful candidate will possess superior organizational skills, a combination of strong scientific, technical, and managerial experience as well as exposure across multiple imaging platforms. The individual should posses the ability to work independently, yet also effectively participate within a team structure.  The candidate must be self-motivated, detail oriented, have excellent communication skills, and thrive with a high degree of responsibility.  

Main Duties & Responsibilities      

  • Provide technical guidance and oversight of the imaging facility: ensure functionality of all instruments; report maintenance issues and scheduling of equipment repairs; maintain records of usage; provide technical guidance and oversight.
  • Provide advanced level instruction to research personnel for equipment use and methods.
  • Assist scientists with data collection, data analysis and image processing.
  • Serve all non-clinical research programs by contributing to target and biomarker identification, and drug mechanism(s) of action for early development programs.
  • Support early translational aspects of drug and biomarker development with research personnel.
  • Serve as a point of contact for image analysis solutions while forging a close working relationship with other members of the AstraZeneca group (e.g. Definiens).
  • Develops and/or maintains budgets and capital expenditure requests
  • Contribute independently to project teams and multitask effectively.
  • Prepare precise technical reports, summaries, protocols, quantitative analyses, and may contribute to regulatory documents. Contribute to preparation of manuscripts and/or patent applications.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement initiatives.
  • Interact proactively with internal and external groups and suppliers. Work with Medimmune/AstraZeneca counterparts in North America and Europe to optimize collaboration across sites to ensure alignment.

Requirements

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

Senior Scientist/Senior Manager: PhD with minimum of 7 (or BS with 15) years of experience. Principal Scientist: PhD with a minimum of 11 (or BS with 17) years of experience.

Knowledge/skills:  Substantial imaging experience across multiple platforms; tissue staining expertise, quality/timely data generation to support multiple therapeutic areas and leadership skills to deliver to multiple stakeholders is required. Histology and Molecular Pathology Imaging experience is desired.

Behavioral competencies: Flexible, detail-oriented, good time management and organizational skills, and ability to work with minimal direction in a matrixed organization.  Proven verbal, written and communication skills.  Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams of scientists.  Previous experience with budget management desired but not required.

High level of independence required to function in a matrix environment.
