Job Description

Role Summary

The Pfizer Oncology Research & Development group in La Jolla, CA is seeking a full-time employee to support the drug discovery process to create innovative cancer therapies. The successful candidate will provide expert scientific and technical expertise towards the discovery and pre-clinical development of small molecule drugs for receptor-class protein targets (e.g. GPCR, NHR, SLC). The successful candidate will work with a high degree of independence to provide biochemical insight on receptor targets and ligands as well as impact cancer drug discovery project teams at a strategic level.

ResponsibilitiesWe are seeking a highly-motivated research scientist to join the Biochemistry & Primary screening group. The researcher will apply their advanced scientific and technical knowledge of cellular receptors such as GPCR and nuclear hormone receptors to the development of small molecule agonists and antagonists for treatment of cancer. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and operation of assays for the characterization of small molecule-protein and protein-protein interactions. The researcher will work closely with colleagues from other scientific disciplines and will contribute their scientific and technical expertise to help direct and guide decisions on a project team. As an expert in receptor biochemistry and function assays, the scientist will directly contribute to the elucidation of mechanisms of drug action and receptor signaling as part of a team focused on the discovery of new cancer drugs.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate must have a Ph.D. in biochemistry or cell biology (or related field) with 4 - 5 years of experience in drug discovery.
  • The individual will be a technical expert with cellular receptors (e.g. GPCR, NHR) and well experienced in methods to characterize agonists and antagonists and their biochemical and cellular function/activities.
  • Experience in the development of robust, functional in vitro assays for the discovery of small molecule agonist/antagonists of membrane receptors is required.
  • Corresponding or senior-authored publications in top-tier journals is also a prerequisite.
  • The candidate must have good communication skills and be capable of working independently and as part of an effective, multi-disciplined team.
