Role Description

The Pfizer Oncology Research Unit in La Jolla is seeking a full-time employee to support the drug discovery process to create innovative cancer therapies. The successful candidate will evaluate drug interactions and protein behavior primarily by label-free methods as a member of the Biophysics Laboratory. In addition, characterization of drug interactions may occur through other biochemical methods. The successful candidate will work with a high degree of independence to provide biophysical insight on targets and ligands as well as impact project teams at a strategic level.



Responsibilities

We have an immediate opening in the Pfizer Oncology Research Unit for a highly productive, independent research colleague to join the Biophysics Group. We are seeking a highly-motivated individual with an advanced practical knowledge of characterizing molecular interactions by biophysical methodologies and a growing knowledge of other relevant disciplines. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for the development and operation of assays for the thermodynamic and kinetic characterization of small molecule-protein and protein-protein interactions. Identification of new biophysical methods is expected in order to provide a leading-edge insight of drug behaviors to the organization. Enzymology experience in elucidating mechanisms of drug action and catalysis is valued. A working knowledge of structural biology will be helpful. Good communication skills (written, verbal), leadership skills, and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment are essential.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate must have a Ph.D. in a biophysics/biochemistry with 3 - 5 years of experience in drug discovery. The individual will be a technical expert with label-free approaches (e.g. calorimetry, SPR) used to characterize biophysical phenomena (e.g. small molecule-protein interactions, protein stability, protein-protein interactions). Experience in mass spectroscopy, enzymology, and protein purification is beneficial. Publication in top-tier journals is also a prerequisite. The candidate must have good communication skills and be capable of working independently. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS Must be able to work safely in a laboratory environment with lab coat, protective eye wear and gloves. The job can requires standing and walking on a daily basis.
