Job Description

Amgen is currently seeking a Principal Device Strategy and Innovation Engineer in our Advanced Device Technology & Innovation group.  In support of Amgen's mission to serve patients, the Advanced Device Technology & Innovation group at Amgen is a diverse team working to identify, develop, commercialize and continuously improve drug delivery devices in order to optimize the patient experience.  The group executes on device initiatives focused on increasing Amgen's delivery offering across therapeutics.

The Principal Engineer will be responsible for supporting the ongoing development of a drug delivery strategy and technology surveillance including identifying key strategic issues for analysis, respond to project requests from Amgen executives and other technical functions, and supervise / execute project work quickly with high quality results. In doing so s/he will structure the issues and analyses, manage work over one or more project teams, interact with a wide range of key constituencies inside (R&D, operations, commercial) and outside of Amgen, and prepare and present findings to management. The Principal Engineer will also represent Device and Final Drug Product Technologies on Product Teams at all stages of development and will perform scenario planning and generate a device technology roadmap that serves the product needs.  

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the development of Amgen's device strategy and technology roadmap across product portfolio

Identify and articulate corporate drug delivery needs by serving as a principle interface to internal customers including: Product Teams, Operations, Commercial, and R&D leadership, Therapy Delivery Innovation (TDI)

Lead periodic refresh activities of drug delivery technology and competitive landscape and value proposition that serves Amgen's product portfolio

Search and identify technologies/ companies that meet business strategy and create business case for partnership, acquisition, or other business relationships

Provide high level valuations of off-platform technologies and support full business case valuations of high priority technology solutions

Generate internal and external innovation to address Amgen's drug delivery needs

Lead and manage cross functional device initiatives while delivering high-quality and timely results

Conduct project scoping, chartering, execution strategy, process improvement activities, and change management of device technology initiatives

Synthesize data generated during technical assessments, business reviews, or due diligence into thorough well-structured and thought-out report and be prepared to present business case and strategy to management

25% domestic travel

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of engineering experience

OR

Master's degree and 6 years of engineering experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 8 years of engineering experience

OR

Associate's degree and 10 years of engineering experience

OR

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of engineering experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctorate or Master's degree in finance, business, science, and / or technology; applied to drug delivery or device technology solutions

8+ years' experience in finance, biotechnology / pharmaceutical / medical device development and / or top tier Management Consulting and / or Investment Banking firms

Ability to work independently and leverage past experience and strong communication skills to collaborate closely with other functions within Amgen.  Strong presence with Executives including ability to communicate effectively on a prepared and ad-hoc basis

Experience in financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and developing business plans

Strong quantitative and qualitative analytic skills, specifically financial analysis

Excellent conceptual problem solving skills with demonstrated ability to bring structure to vaguely defined problems, pragmatically scope problem solving approach, and manage execution

Strong influencing skills with a demonstrated ability to influence different styles

Proven ability to utilize and analyze networks internal/external in all mediums (Print, electronic, social) to extract information pertaining to Amgen's device strategic portfolio

Proven experience as a member and leader of a high performing team

Proven leadership skills and organization management experience

Experience developing and mentoring staff
