This position reports directly to the Head of Experimental Therapeutics.
The Pre-Clinical Technician will work closely with the preclinical and clinical scientists to design and execute mouse studies using bioluminescence (BLI) imaging as well as the entire spectrum of conventional (e.g., caliper measurements, clinical scoring) endpoints to evaluate pre-clinical novel cancer therapies. Must be able to work in a team environment and contribute to other studies. May be asked to assist in some technical support duties. Must be able to understand and follow ARF standard operating procedures and DFCI institutional guidelines and policies. Individual must understand and follow the local, state, federal and regulations and guidelines.
- Assist with the establishment and maintenance of mouse cancer models (e.g. by injection or minor surgery).
Perform efficacy and tolerability testing in mouse cancer models
Maintain treatment records and inventory of all pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies, and help with other administrative tasks.
Responsible for maintaining and reporting accurate records, including but not limited to data associated with drug efficacy and tolerability studies, health monitoring reports, receipt of sentinel animals and animal disposition logs. Requires a working knowledge of basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and other related software.
Routine handling, restraint, identification (including ear notching, tagging, tattooing, and toe clipping) and sexing of common laboratory animals. Ability to distinguish various common laboratory animal strains in accordance with standardized genetic nomenclature and phenotype identification.
Collaborate with and participate in the execution of other imaging modalities as appropriate and necessary.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS: (Education, certifications, years of experience)
- High school diploma required; BA/BS in Animal Science or related life science is highly desired.
- LAT certification preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS: (include physical efforts when necessary)
- After receiving specific training, this position will be required to occasionally work in the ABSL-2/3 suite treating and monitoring study animals.
- All aspects of this position expose personnel to animal fur and dander, which may be hazardous to those with allergic conditions. Disinfectants, detergents and soaps are used in the daily sanitation assignments.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Operation of centrifuge, anesthesia machine, autoclave, heat lamp, restrainer, tumor caliper, scales, barcode scanners and ATP luminometers.
Position is located at 27 Dry Dock Ave, South Boston
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- At least 0-2 years of work experience in small animal studies in academia or industry preferred.
- Knowledge in animal studies including IP, IV, SQ injections, oral gavage, blood collection, and minor surgical procedures preferred (e.g., renal capsule implants, mammary fat pad implants).
- Must be organized and meticulous in record keeping.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with members of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
- Individual must be able to safely handle, restrain, perform treatments and euthanize laboratory mice as directed. An understanding of mouse breeding colony maintenance required for establishing breeding colony pairs, sexing animals, weaning pups and entering colony data on cage cards and in computer database.
- Prior preclinical BLI experience preferred.
- Previous experience working with infectious agents (ABSL-2/3 level) would be helpful but not required. In-house training will be provided prior to working in ABSL-2/3 areas.
