Disulfide rich peptides (DRPs) or cysteine knot proteins are found widely in nature.  They exist in animals and in plants displaying a plethora of pharmacologic activities.  Many cysteine knot proteins have been isolated as natural products with demonstrated efficacy as bio-therapeutics.  Ziconotide, a ?-conotoxin MVIIa calcium channel blocker is approved and marketed for severe chronic pain.  You will work within the Discovery / Protein Engineering group to explore disulfide rich peptides or cysteine knot proteins as an alternative scaffold for drug discovery.

You will have the opportunity to be part of an exciting initiative to establish this research platform. Some of your responsibilities might include:

•The design and construction of libraries with disulfide rich peptides or cysteine knot proteins, evaluation of display technologies, optimization of screening methods and validation of libraries on targets of interest.  
•Working in a multidisciplinary team, interacting with colleagues to develop bio-product opportunities.
•Flexibility and willingness to learn new techniques and an ability and desire to learn from the scientific literature is preferred.
•Work independently and be able to solve problems.  Be self-motivated while able to work in a flexible, team-oriented environment.
•Publish study results in peer-reviewed journal or patent filing.

•This position is not permanent. It is for a fixed duration (FDE) of two years with potential to extend annually for up to 4 years.

Basic Qualifications  

•Ph.D. in Biological Sciences with relevant research experience.
•Strong Molecular Biology and Structure and SAR skills preferred.

Additional Skills/Preferences  

•Strong skills in molecular biology and/or biochemical techniques are required. (e.g., DNA and protein analytical techniques, such as PCR, cloning, SDS-PAGE, Western blot, ELISA, enzyme assays, receptor binding assays etc.).
•Experience with structures and SAR of cysteine knot proteins is required.
•Experience with protein engineering, phage display is highly desired.
•Strong technical, organization, documentation, and communication skills (verbal and written) are essential.
•Experience with assay development, in vitro assays and tissue culture is preferred.
•Prior work with cysteine knot protein expression or synthesis.
