Job Description

We are seeking postdoctoral neurobiologist for studying the role of the noradrenergic (NA) system in modulation of cognition and central and peripheral immune systems in the context of neurodegenerative disorders.

Project Summary:

Severe degeneration of NA neurons has been reported in neurodegenerative disorders and has been proposed to be important for progression of pathology, neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunction.  NA plays a critical role in regulating not only neuronal function, but also neuroinflammation, and has been shown to govern compensatory and protective mechanisms for neuronal function and survival. While there is growing evidence that NA is an important modulator of this pathophysiology, adrenergic receptor subtypes are expressed on multiple cell types in the central nervous system, and little is known about the differential contribution of these receptors or cell type specificity to this modulation of pathophysiology. We are developing mechanistic tools and paradigms for identifying cell type and receptor subtype specificity for adrenergic modulation of cognition and pathology. We are determining the role of adrenergic tone in this context and the mechanistic basis of adrenergic receptor subtype tone on central and peripheral immune cells.


Using cutting-edge chemogenetic technology and conditional cell-specific modulation of beta-adrenergic receptor subtypes, the project aims to investigate the mechanistic basis of adrenergic receptor subtype tone on cognitive function, CNS resident microglia and infiltrating macrophage function, and recruitment of peripheral immune cells to the brain, to determine mechanisms through which modulation of these receptors can alleviate neuroinflammation and reverse cognitive deficits in pathophysiology of CNS disorders.

The postdoctoral scientists/students enrolled in this program will interact with and collaborate heavily with translational neurobiologists in the laboratory studying diverse CNS disorders using pharmacological, mechanistic and behavioral tools.



-   Applicants should have PhD degree in neurobiology, neuropharmacology, neuroendocrinology or related science.
-   Good working knowledge/interest in molecular pharmacology, molecular biology, pathology and biochemistry.
-   Proficiency with experimental approaches common to the field (e.g. mammalian cell culture, qRT-PCR, ELISA, Western blot, immunofluorescence staining, sectioning and  microscopy, etc).
-   Experience working with animals is preferred.
-   Demonstrated ability to independently design and execute experiments, interpret data and identify appropriate follow-up strategies.
-   Publication record.
-   Demonstrated Grantsmanship.


-   Preferred but not required for first two years.
