   Main Duties and Responsibilities  

 

   The Pathologist / Senior Pathologist will have a highly visible leadership and scientific advisory roles in the Pathology Group and within wider Translational Science (TS) functions at MedImmune. The Pathology Group is based in Cambridge, UK and Gaithersburg, Maryland (Medimmune Headquarter) and is part of Biologics Safety Assessment.  BSA is part of the TS Functions within Research.  

   The Pathologist / Senior Pathologist will report to the Head Pathologist and will be based in Gaithersburg. The remit of the Pathology Group spans across all key areas of drug discovery and development at MedImmune, including target identification and validation, animal model development, pathology evaluation for efficacy studies,immunohistochemical-based
assay development fortissue-crossreactivity,
toxicologic pathology and companion diagnostics (CDx) development.  Relevant work for CDx development includes preclinical and clinical trial biomarker development and interpretation of TS-related results from clinical trials.  

   Major Responsibilities:
 

       
  •      Serves as Pathology Project Leader or Translational Team Leader to coordinate all pathology-related activities in settings of research and translational sciences teams with special emphasis on biomarker development for clinical oncology trials    
  •    
  •      Works within a matrix environment of the translational sciences, develops appropriate pathology strategy for full evaluation  (preclinical and clinical stages) of candidate molecules    
  •    
  • Provide strategic scientific and clinical input to translational groups and project teams locally and internationally
  •    
  •      Provides senior-level guidance to other pathologists and scientists in other disciplines for, and participation in, investigative / clinical studies studies for the purpose of developing novel, safe, drugs (biologics) and helps develop assays aimed at selecting patients likely to respond.    
  •    
  •      Senior member of the Pathology function who may plays a key role in mentoring other pathologists, and is considered a major resource for best processes/practices in his/her major area of expertise

  • Work closely with research and early clinical project teams (Scientists and Physician-Scientists) to design and interpret slide and human tissue-based experiments; evaluate biomarkers in human and xenograft samples via techniques such as IHC, ISH, IF, LCM, and protein assays
  •    
  • Network internally and externally with other pathologists, clinicians and scientists on project activities
    . Is recognized by AZ and other related entities as an expert in his/her areas of expertise, and is consulted by these entities as a source of knowledge.

   Essential Requirements
 

Requirements

   Education:
  M.D. or D.V.M. degree from an accredited medical/veterinary school and board certification in pathology by a world-recognized examination board.  A Ph.D in experimental or human pathology or a related filed is also required.  

   Experience:
Pathologists will have 5 yrs of experience in the field and Senior pathologists will have the depth of knowledge from at least 10 years of experience in biopharmaceutical or academic settings providing leadership. Senior pathologists will be versed in conducting preclinical / clinical studies with minimal scientific/technical support from other pathologists. In addition a strong publication record is highly desirable.  

   Knowledge
 

   The candidate should have in-depth understanding and multiple years of experience with a wide application of technical principles, theories, and current concepts in investigative, human or veterinary pathology.  Detailed knowledge and experience in oncology, cancer immunotherapy, medical immunology and clinical research are highly desirable.  

   The Senior Pathologist will be recognized by the greater pharmaceutical and pathology arenas as a leader in his/her area of specialization (drug development, investigational, molecular, human pathology, etc.) via book chapter authorship, published, peer reviewed, research or position papers, and/or editorship of recognized journals in pathology or translational medicine. Significant knowledge of later stage drug development or clinical trial support is also desirable at this level.
