Position Overview:
The Upstream Engineer will primarily conduct upstream processing for manufacturing activities. The position entails day-to-day management of operations related to microbial fermentation and other manufacturing activities; process improvement; protocol development and execution; batch record creation and completion; data analysis; adherence to laboratory and company policies; assisting in training and productivity oversight of manufacturing associates or technicians as needed. This position will require excellent technical, analytical and problem-solving skills, along with ability to operate independently on progressively more complex activities and projects.

Job Responsibilities will include:
•   Perform protein expression by microbial fermentation while working independently and consulting with leadership on design and execution. This includes but not limited to: cell culture, cell banking, bioreactor operation, cell plating, cell harvesting, media preparation, equipment cleaning and sterilization; maintaining knowledge of scientific trends and industry processes through readings, conferences and seminars; reviewing literature to enhance or improve manufacturing procedures and methods.
•   Conduct limited characterization of metabolic products and protein expression using common laboratory techniques.
•   Maintain required documentation in an accurate and timely manner, and adhere to written procedures, including manufacturing batch records.
•   General laboratory duties include: order lab supplies, maintain inventory and reagents, analysis of manufacturing data and presentation of summary results to team, monitoring production trends and identifying potential issues or opportunities for improvement, proper maintenance of laboratory equipment.
•   Implement complex projects and process development, as needed.

Reporting Structure:
This position has no direct report but may provide direction and guidance on day-to-day work and may have a lead role. This position reports to the Executive Vice President of Manufacturing.

Requirements

•   Master’s degree or higher in Life Science or Engineering
•   Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in laboratory setting, preferably conducting or supporting microbial protein expression
•   Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
•   Excellent project management, time management and multi-tasking skills
•   Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•   Excellent computer skills
•   Ability to function independently and exercise good judgement
•   Ability to identify problems and solutions then take action to resolve
