GPPS (Global Product and Portfolio Strategy) bridges science and commercial, integrating corporate, portfolio, therapy areas and product strategies, providing strategic direction from early-stage research through to commercialization.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Performance, Strategy and Portfolio Team serve as the central Financial Planning and Analysis function of AstraZeneca’s Research and Development Division. Collectively the team is responsible for providing business partnering and reporting services to Science Unit Leadership and central Group Finance. In addition, the Manager will coordinate statutory and information requests for AstraZeneca legal entities and have full controller responsibility for managing a Chinese / AstraZeneca Joint venture.

As the Manager of R&D Finance, the successful candidate will lead the global consolidation of management and statutory reporting for AstraZeneca R&D and coordinate the financial forecasting cycle. The successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively, as a trusted business partner, with all levels of the R&D Finance team to ensure timely and accurate completion of Group Finance reporting deliverables.

The primary duties of this role include consolidated month-end accounting and reporting activities in support of Function and Project activity, coordination of other various periodic reporting activities, including tax requests, and ad-hoc financial analysis.

This position will play a key role in the planning and consolidation of the R&D Business Planning & Forecasting cycle. The Manager of R&D Finance will lead key tasks throughout the Annual Budgeting cycle, including the Annual Budget Update, the Quarterly Rolling Business Update, and long-range operating plan. The Manager of R&D Finance will be responsible for ensuring data quality in all aspects of financial forecasting & reporting, with strict compliance policy, governance and financial control. The Manager will also work closely with Portfolio Planning and OPAL teams.

In addition, it is expected that the successful applicant will quickly become a Subject Matter Expert in the financial process/ systems operated by the R&D Finance team, support the sharing of best practices across R&D, and enable efficiency in our reporting tasks by leading system/process improvement activities.

Finally, it is expected this role will have additional responsibilities that could include leading improvement / simplification projects across R&D, representing the R&D Finance interests with Group/cross-functional teams or other ad hoc activities.

This high-profile role will offer an exceptional opportunity to understand AstraZeneca’s financial reporting & planning process while gaining direct exposure to business issues affecting AZs Science Units at both a tactical & strategic level. The successful candidate will be a proactive self-starter that can work independently to drive deliverables/projects as well as work collaboratively within FP&A and across the Science Unit(s).

The role will be based in Gaithersburg.

Business Strategy & Decision Support

  • Providing accurate, high quality financial analysis in support of business decision making for R&D Finance and other Business Partners
  • Maintaining Project Cost Analysis and reporting to support R&D Finance and other Business Partners
  • Delivering ad hoc financial analyses in support of Medimmune Finance Business Partners, Managers and the Performance Strategy & Reporting Team requirements
  • Full controller responsibility for managing a Chinese / AstraZeneca Joint venture

Business Performance

  • Communication of monthly financial performance, and provide analytical and data collection support to business planning processes
  • Producing monthly financial management information, explanation of variances to budget, and commentary for key finance and business customers
  • Working with Finance Business Partners, Finance Directors and Business Customers to prepare accurate forecasts to support regular and ad hoc business updates, using appropriate leading edge, modelling tools
  • Co-ordinating ad hoc data collection activities, including requests from Tax group

Continuous Improvement, Coaching & Governance

  • Support continuous improvement in Finance processes/capabilities
  • Pursue opportunities for continuous professional/technical development
  • Identifying opportunities to improve working practices and processes
  • Ensuring compliance with AZ Financial Controls Framework and SOX requirements for month end processes
  • Coaching Analysts in their provision of support to R&D Financial and Function partners

Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • A focused financial professional with strong analytical and customer service delivery skills
  • 5 or more years experience with financial modelling, forecasting, and business decision support
  • Proficient in the use of accounting systems & working knowledge and understanding of various financial systems and processes
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Strong organizational and communication (written, verbal) skills
  • Thorough understanding of functional cost drivers and able to deliver variance explanations
  • Able to understand the value of business drivers within a business area, to work collaboratively developing accurate forecasts, and to support strategic business decisions
  • Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, or similar
  • MBA, with specialization in Finance or Accounting is beneficial
  • Financial Planning & Analysis experience
  • Experience working in a global organization, preferably within the pharmaceuticals industry, and knowledge of the drug development life cycle and commercial aspects of the industry
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team and liaising with senior managers
  • Demonstrated experience working in a customer facing role with finance business partnering
  • Good cultural awareness, exposure to global working, collaboration and teaming skills
