AstraZeneca’s vision in Oncology is to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas - breast, ovarian, lung and hematological cancers. As well as other tumor types, these are being targeted through four key platforms - immunotherapy, the genetic drivers of cancer and resistance, DNA damage repair, and antibody drug conjugates, underpinned by personalized healthcare and biomarker technologies.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This role plays an important part in delivering against our bold ambition of becoming leader in Oncology and eliminating cancer as a cause of death. The Communications Director is accountable for building, enhancing and protecting the reputation of AstraZeneca’s pipeline and brands in Lung cancers (with a focus on our small molecules portfolio) and for driving commercial success through impactful communications across internal and external audiences. This responsibility expands to building and leveraging the reputation of AstraZeneca as a potential leader in Lung cancer.

The role is responsible for the development and execution of an innovative global communications strategy in Lung cancer, with a focus on our EGFR franchise. The Director will develop programmes and tell a compelling story to support our commercial brands -Iressa, Tagrisso. He/she will also bring to life our science-led pipeline in lung cancer (including sovalitinib) and our multiple combination trials in a way that resonates with a wide range of key audiences including employees, partners, medical community, academics and researchers, patients and the media.

Essential Requirements

  • Drive an integrated approach to milestones, news flow and activity planning to effectively maximise opportunities and prepare against issues (e.g. approvals, reimbursements, key data updates & publications, investment decisions, presence at congresses, competitor activity, news or changes in policy and regulatory environment). Scope of responsibility expands from Phase I through to commercialisation and LoE.
  • Develop and continually refresh a compelling narrative for our Lung cancer franchise, in close collaboration with his/her Immuno-Oncology colleagues, with clear messages and sharp proof points to build awareness and confidence among key stakeholder groups.
  • Develop an impactful media relations strategy, working closely with the key markets and Global Media Relations team. When needed, effectively manage related partnering activity milestones and development of press releases, statements, Q&As, with the Business Development and Partnering Communications Director.
  • Lead the development of communication materials (e.g. press releases, internal updates and engaging content, external content for website and multi stakeholder briefings, information for quarterly financial reporting tools etc.)
  • Responsible for leading issues preparedness and crisis management to protect brand and company reputation.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement cross-brand activities such as PR presence at pan-oncology Congresses, brands’ news flow processes, web site content updates.
  • Accountable for effective use of internal and external resources, including smart deployment of agency support, and management of contractors, through clear objectives, KPIs, continued strive for excellence and innovation.
  • Provide effective communications and issues management counsel to brand leaders/Lung cancer teams to ensure external insights and patient-related considerations are taken into account in planning and strategy development. This includes providing effective media-training to internal and external spokespersons

Essential Requirements

  • Graduate with working knowledge of global Pharmaceutical market and innovative life sciences environment. Oncology experience highly preferred.
  • Established track-record of delivering impactful, strategic and content rich communications programmes and proactive stakeholder management with demonstrable measures of success.
  • Substantial experience of healthcare communications gained in-house at a leading multinational biopharma company or at a global agency, backed up by deep understanding of regulatory environment, compliance framework, and perspectives of key external stakeholders such as physicians, payers, patients.
  • Significant experience of leading issues management in a similar environment / for global brands/disease areas.
  • Strong media relations experience, including in digital and social media.
  • Strong proven leadership skills and collaborative behaviour required to establish ways of working and to drive successful delivery against strategy through a broad mix of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven capability to influence and counsel senior leaders and teams across functions and geographical boundaries.
  • Ability to provide effective coaching and guidance to peers and other team members.
  • Ability to work in a global environment including understanding of cultural differences.
  • Ability to combine strategic thinking with hands on delivery.
  • Experience of creating and translating scientific / technical content for a broad range of audiences.
  • The role will involve travel, as required, to key markets and locations of leading medical congresses (about 20%).
