Intellectual Property Legal Assistant

Company Overview:

Global Blood Therapeutics, Inc. (GBT) is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical dedicated to discovering, developing and commercializing novel therapeutics to treat grievous blood-based disorders with significant unmet need. GBT is developing its lead product candidate, GBT440, for the treatment of sickle cell disease and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Product Overview:

We are passionate and committed to developing our product candidate GBT440, an oral, once-daily therapy that is designed to modulate hemoglobin affinity for oxygen. GBT440 has the potential to treat sickle cell disease and improve hypoxemia in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.


•   Review all incoming and outgoing correspondence and extract information that needs to be entered into GBT’s web-based docketing database (Foundation IP) ensuring completeness and accuracy.
•   Maintain and update docketing system in a timely manner.  Enter application identifiers, due dates, reminder dates and annotate entries as appropriate or instructed by the IP counsel.
•   Assist in quality assurance review for patent filings by noting and referring any errors or omissions during docketing to IP counsel.
•   Prepare weekly docket reports and at other specified intervals for decision-making by IP counsel and business stakeholders.
•   Ensure all docket dates and all patent/trademark related deadlines are met.
•   Organize and maintain electronic files of prosecution history in a timely manner
•   Work with the IP legal team to develop, implement, and maintain docketing processes, procedures and policies for patents, and patent applications.
•   Work with CPA Global to ensure company database is current, complete and accurate and for timely payment of patent annuities and maintenance fees.
•   Work with the IP team and outside counsel to collect references and ensure Information Disclosure Statements (IDS) are filed in a timely manner (including US, IN, and IL)
•   Assist US and foreign counsels in completion of formalities related to patent filings including execution of declaration, assignments, POAs, etc. in a timely manner.
•   Assist legal and finance groups in preparation of 3-year IP budget forecast and oversee processes to monitor IP budget and spend.
•   Coordinate between IP and Accounting / Finance Groups the submission of vendor invoices, monthly budget reviews, monthly vendor statements, purchase order submission, and budget tracking
•   Review files and assist with any file transfers.
•   Perform additional projects and administrative tasks (including set up meetings) as assigned.


•   At least 2-3 years of patent prosecution experience (US and foreign).  Must have knowledge of deadlines for both US, PCT, and foreign matters, and knowledge of current USPTO rules and procedures, US forms, navigating PAIR, and e-filing. In-house experience in life sciences company preferred.
•   Experience using a computerized docketing system (Foundation IP docketing software experience preferred) or willing to learn.  
•   Proficient in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
•   Excellent writing, organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
•   Strong attention to detail and proofreading skills.
•   Ability to manage multiple priorities under deadline pressures, and to communicate effectively.
•   Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively independently and with others.
•   Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of the company's affairs.
•   Take ownership and overall responsibility for the completeness and correctness of patent application files and docketing database.
•   Ability to analyze and adapt processes in order to improve efficiency.
•   Actively participate in team projects and provide deliverables on an agreed timeline.
•   Comfortable in a paperless environment with electronic only patent files.
•   Ability to work under minimal supervision.
•   Must have a positive, can-do attitude with the ability to flex in a frequently shifting environment.
•   Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required
