Job Description

The Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD), relocated to Emeryville, California, is dedicated to fighting parasitic infectious diseases of high medical need in a dynamic working environment. NITD is an independent Institute within the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR), and as such has full access to NIBR know-how and resources including the chemists of the Global Discovery Chemistry group and the Infectious Diseases drug discovery teams (antiviral and antibacterial) co-located in Emeryville. NITD is renowned for applying cutting-edge technologies to the discovery of high quality clinical candidates for the treatment of neglected diseases. The Institute has a highly collaborative culture and has close links with academic centers of excellence and a broad range of non-governmental and philanthropic organizations around the globe (Wellcome Trust, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Medicines for Malaria Venture and Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative).

About the position:
We are seeking a motivated individual with a scientific background in infectious diseases and relevant expertise in the screening of small molecules and mechanistic characterization of novel chemical entities. The successful candidate will lead from the bench with design and implementation of biochemical and cellular assays that support the discovery and characterization of novel anti-parasitic drugs.

Specifically the candidate will:
• Design, develop, and implement phenotypic and target-based assays for high-throughput screening
• Characterize the in vitro pharmacological properties of anti-parasitic small molecule inhibitors
• Interpret complex results and provide input to multidisciplinary project teams supporting discovery and early preclinical development of drug candidates
• Collaborate across disciplines to provide innovative approaches to discovery challenges
• Troubleshoot assays and instrumentation
• Ensure integrity, quality, and timely delivery of data
• Communicate research strategy and results internally and externally
• Recruit, develop and manage people talent
• Ensure compliance with local and global Novartis standards

Requirements

Minimum Requirements
• Ph.D. in relevant discipline with 0-5+ years of experience
• Experience with small molecule assay development, lead discovery and/or lead optimization, in a pharmaceutical setting is preferred
• Demonstrated mastery of biochemical, cellular, and molecular biology techniques
• Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate and achieve assay robustness, reproducibility, and data quality
• Significant knowledge of the physiology and/or genetics of major human parasitic pathogens
• Authored peer-reviewed publications
• Keen interest and demonstrated experience in anti-infective drug discovery
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Innovative mindset and collaborative spirit
• Positive attitude and “can-do” mentality
