Job Description

The Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD), relocated to Emeryville, California, is dedicated to fighting parasitic infectious diseases of high medical need in a dynamic working environment. NITD is an independent Institute within the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR), and as such has full access to NIBR know-how and resources including the chemists of the Global Discovery Chemistry group and the Infectious Diseases drug discovery teams (antiviral and antibacterial) co-located in Emeryville. NITD is renowned for applying cutting-edge technologies to the discovery of high quality clinical candidates for the treatment of neglected diseases. The Institute has a highly collaborative culture and has close links with academic centers of excellence and a broad range of non-governmental and philanthropic organizations around the globe (Wellcome Trust, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Medicines for Malaria Venture and Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative).

About the position:
The successful candidate to this position will report to the Head of NITD and lead a team developing innovative therapeutic approaches for the treatment of diseases caused by kinetoplastid parasites. The group will support the development of cellular and target based assays to discover and characterize drugs active against Trypanosoma and Leishmania parasites.

Specifically, the candidate will:
•   Lead a biology team responsible for the development of innovative chemotherapeutic approaches
•   Design and implement drug discovery strategies for trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis
•   Play a key role in the coordination of activities across the range of drug discovery disciplines
•   Work closely with the scientific leadership and the management team of the institute
•   Present therapeutic strategy and key results internally and externally through peer-reviewed articles and presentations at conferences
•   Monitor scientific literature and technological landscape
•   Support scientific input for patent filing and funding application
•   Ensure integrity and quality of data
•   Recruit, develop and manage talents
•   Ensure compliance with local and global standards in Health/Safety & Environment

Requirements

Minimum Requirements
•   Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (MD will be a plus) with at least 10+ years of experience
•   Relevant supervisory / management experience of similarly sized teams
•   Specific biological expertise on the life-cycle of Trypanosoma and Leishmania parasites
•   Knowledge of host immunological response to kinetoplastid parasitic infection is desirable
•   Authored significant peer-reviewed publications in the kinetoplastid biology field
•   Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•   Innovative mindset and strong collaborative spirit
•   Positive attitude and “can-do” mentality
Additional beneficial skills:
•   Experience in drug discovery processes or pharmaceutical research will be an advantage
•   Proven track record in fund-raising with non-governmental philanthropic organizations is desirable
