Function / Team / Location

  • The successful individual will report to the EVP, Human Resources with a dotted line reporting to the EVP, Oncology.
  • The successful individual will be a member of the HR leadership team and Global Oncology leadership team.
  • As the HR Lead for Oncology the incumbent has full responsibility for defining and implementing the HR strategy and people plan corresponding to company strategy in order to support the Oncology Business Unit (OBU).
  • The role will be based in Gaithersburg, MD USA.

Oncology Business Unit

  • AstraZeneca is once again emerging at the forefront of the Oncology market. The Company's portfolio of inline products has experienced significant growth due to the development of new indications for leading legacy products that will support and fund development for the company's pipeline of innovative Immuno-Oncology assets that have the potential to fundamentally transform treatment.
  • In order to support this growth, AstraZeneca has built a fully dedicated Oncology business unit and is seeking a seasoned HR Professional to help build, support and lead the change management necessary to fully optimize this approach.

Candidate Focus & Challenge

  • Develops and implements the HR strategy and people plan that is aligned with Global HR and the build out of the Oncology business unit and Oncology strategy.
  • Develop the Oncology Workforce plan with a particular emphasis on acquiring talent across all OBU markets as well as building the short and long term capabilities required for the Oncology business strategy.
  • Manage global workforce; including interaction and influence with the European Councils.
  • Contributes to the Oncology leadership team, acting as a business advisor, provides assistance with business planning, identifying HR implications and providing recommendations.
  • Directly involved in recruitment and talent initiatives for senior executive levels to ensure Oncology is well positioned to deliver against its strategic objectives.
  • Financially plans and manages budgets for all areas of responsibility.
  • Leads Oncology HR team and builds capability within the HR function to: -
    • develop and implement the people plan.
    • ensure the day to day HR support to business is fulfilled including, but not limited to, talent management, reward, performance management, recruitment, and training and development.
    • facilitate, develop, and deliver on workforce plan by working closely with Oncology leadership team and relevant global and local HR functions.
    • actively monitor strength of the Oncology talent pipeline, facilitate talent exchange within AZ and acquisition of external talent.
    • ensure strategy is set and delivered in collaboration with relevant Centre of Expertise (CoE’s) in the areas of compensation including market analysis; learning and development including career and training specific to oncology needs and analytics to ensure a robust predictive data set to influence the business.

Candidate Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Mastery of HR area and multi-disciplinary experience (cross-functional or functional, experience in at least one CoE).
  • Experience in a senior global role working with Senior level leaders and European work councils.
  • Evidence of successful leadership of major change.
  • Strategic thinker; able to translate complex business plans into actionable people plans.
  • Strong commercial and analytical skills.
  • Outstanding influencer; able to deliver results without direct command and control.
  • Degree and postgraduate HR certification or equivalent.
  • Experience and understanding of Oncology ecosystem, capabilities and talent.
  • Experience in at least two regions - Global, North America or Europe.
  • General understanding of the development and commercialization of pharmaceutical products in Oncology.
  • Mobility (frequent business trips).
  • Fluency in English.
