AstraZeneca is recruiting for a Head of Health Informatics to join the Advanced Analytics Center (AAC) in Biometrics & Information Sciences, Global Medicines Development. This is a Senior Director role, leading a global team of health informaticians, and providing a high level of scientific and strategic leadership to the organization. The Health Informatics team within the AAC, in Biometrics & Information Sciences (B&I) provides real-world analytical services using patient-level databases including claims, EMR, and registry data to answer a variety of questions related to clinical development, payer evidence, medical evidence, health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), and other clinical or commercial activities.

The Head of Health Informatics will work very closely with stakeholder groups in Global Payer Evidence and Pricing (GPEP) and the Real World Evidence Centre of Excellence (RWE CoE), driving and accelerating the delivery of informatics capabilities and real-world data analytics to support payer and medical evidence generation and real-world observational studies.

The role holder will also provide informatics steer and support on AZ external RWE collaborations globally. He/she is expected to help to create and foster strategic data partnerships with existing and new data rich organizations, enable the integration of multiple complex data sources, advise the rapid development of applications and services, and manage the analysis and mining of vast and heterogeneous data to integrated payer and medical insight in key Clinical Development, Early Discovery Research and Commercial decisions.

Major responsibilities are as follows

  • Lead the health informatics team to provide RWE descriptive and advanced analytics to AstraZeneca global observational study teams throughout the study life cycle including hypothesis generation, study concept development, study design, feasibility analysis and cohort generation
  • Lead the team to provide innovative RWE analytics services to other customer groups including Global Medical Affairs, Payer Evidence, Global Portfolio & Program Strategy, and regional marketing companies
  • Lead the team to provide RWE analytics to support clinical trial design and feasibility analysis
  • Lead the team to implement innovative informatics tools and technologies which drive real-world insights
  • Lead and advise AZ global RWE data strategy development for all therapeutic areas
  • Assess RWE data/technology/methods gaps against medical/payer evidence plans in all therapeutic areas
  • Serve as a leadership team member of AAC
  • Serve as a leadership team member within MEOR/RWE CoE
  • Advise and support innovative pilot EHR projects in clinical development and product launch such as EHR/registry facilitated patient & site identification and “virtual” placebo arm for clinical trials
  • Steward AZ licensed external RWE data sets, evaluate emerging RWE vendors/partners for potential collaborations, and advise on RWE data acquisitions and collaborations
  • Advise and lead the health informatics component of critical, multi-country observational studies that utilize the EMR technologies
  • Advise and lead the health informatics capability within Global Medicines Development to ensure clinical development teams can innovative in generation of clinical evidence

The ideal candidate for this role will bring a proven track record of creating value through the utilisation of real-world data to provide health analytics and insights in both R&D and Commercial contexts.

Minimum Requirements – Education and Experience

  • MD or PhD in medical/health informatics, epidemiology or a related scientific discipline
  • Experience working in a patient care setting that allows the candidate to bring the medical perspective into real-world evidence generation and observational studies
  • Substantial experience in the areas of Healthcare Real World Data Analytics, HI, or HEOR with primary responsibilities involving the analysis of non-clinical trial, real world healthcare data
  • Significant pharmaceutical or biotech industry experience is highly preferred
  • Strong Expertise in EMR/Health IT, disease registries, and claims databases
  • Expertise in clinical data standards, medical terminologies and controlled vocabularies used in healthcare data and ontologies
  • Experience in real-world evidence and a sophisticated understanding of study designs and quantitative analytic methods
  • Strong track record in delivering leading edge informatics capabilities in pharmaceutical R&D and commercial environments
  • Demonstrated ability to build long-term relationships with stakeholders at senior levels, understand relevant scientific/business challenges at a deep level and translate into RWE analytics or services to deliver defined value
  • Ability to lead & manage multi-disciplinary health informatics projects
  • Develop strategic plans for comprehensive informatics support to an entire TA or R&D capability
  • Ability to build long term external relationships with industrial & academic partners, to achieve strategic aims of health informatics and AAC
  • Strong track record of delivering large, cross functional projects
  • strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience working in a global organization and delivering global solutions

  • Build capability that becomes a source of sustained competitive advantage for AZ/MedI in identifying, acquiring, integrating and mining diverse RWE data from multiple geographic and healthcare system sources to support evidence generation and real-world studies
